Could be. It's been pretty common in video games to make Oda the big-bad (hi, Onimusha). Popular culture does what the fuck it wants with history.

Also, hi, Sengoku Basara and hi... about a lot of other Sengoku period themed media.

I think it's because he was the first of the three warlords and as such, lends himself perfectly as the "first boss battle" you need to go through to get to a proper unification. So he's portrayed as this OTT evil guy.

Are there really any warlords who couldn't be described as "ruthless killers" at least to some extent? Isn't that a large part of how you become a successful warlord?

Eh, to an extent, I sort of agree. Part of it does feel kinda dodgy in general to me -strictly IMHO, that is-, but I still enjoy stuff like, say, Eternal Sonata, or even Bluth's 'Anastasia' (yeah, Rasputin didn't use magic magic or have a talking bat for that matter... but c'mon man, Christopher Lloyd!). =V

Secret 9 - Historical figures, Pokemon Conquest (warning for underage)

[Picture is Oda Novunaga from the videogame "Pokémon Conquest". The Pokémon Zekrom is next to him. Nobunaga is a man wearing Feudal era Japanese-style purple, yellow, dark gray and red armor and coat. He has long dark hair tied up and light skin. He looks serious. Zekrom is this greenish dark gray creature. It stands upright on two legs, has a human like torso, and has two arms, two wings and a sort of bird like head but without the beak. It has this wavy ethereal-like protrusions as if they were horns coming out the top of its head. It has two red eyes, but no apparent mouth.

I hate when canons I'd like to get into have characters based on real life. Even when it's really loosely. It feels creepy! And it doesn't help that all kinds of interesting historical figures were actually pretty horrible people.

Like this fucker! I'd have an easier time enjoying Pokemon Conquest if I could just forget that, say, Oda Nobunaga was a ruthless killer. And a pederast. See why it feels creepy?!

This is a secret because I think people would tell me I'm overreacting. I just don't want to feel like I'm condoning murderous pedos by playing some stupid game!

part of it is the historical context at the time. i'm not going to sit here and defend pederasty, and i do agree that nobunaga is a borderline-villainous character. of course, koei does this with a lot of people. sima shi and sima zhao were fairly brutal tyrants, and dynasty warriors makes them into bishounen heroes. the fandom goes batshit for them. but i have to remind myself that they're going batshit for the fictional, loosely-based-upon-history version who is a lazy but good-natured wastrel, not the actual "guy who had his emperor murdered and pinned the blame on the people he ordered to carry out the assassination in the first place" asshole.
