...He was a very historically important warlord, not a "ruthless killer". But sure, let's say that is what he was -- it's pretty uncool to equate that to his relationship with Ranmaru.

Yeah OP is completely taking him out of historical context, probably while doing nothing more than skim-reading a wikipedia page.

I wonder if they even read that much. To me it sounds more like fandom hearsay from people who were ignorant of any historical context in the first place.

Could be. It's been pretty common in video games to make Oda the big-bad (hi, Onimusha). Popular culture does what the fuck it wants with history.

Also, hi, Sengoku Basara and hi... about a lot of other Sengoku period themed media.

I think it's because he was the first of the three warlords and as such, lends himself perfectly as the "first boss battle" you need to go through to get to a proper unification. So he's portrayed as this OTT evil guy.

Are there really any warlords who couldn't be described as "ruthless killers" at least to some extent? Isn't that a large part of how you become a successful warlord?
