But sometimes you do have to let assholes be assholes, like when your job is involved and you could lose it because calling out someone too much for being an asshole is taken as "hostile behavior." Shitty, but it happens.

Actually I just got out of a department meeting where someone told us, "If someone's walking by and hears you talking to someone, and they think you're harassing the other person, IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THE "VICTIM" INVOLVED WAS OKAY WITH THE SITUATION. You will get written up for sexual harassment."

I was kinda creeped out by it to be honest, because I know any potential gay interaction is gonna have a way lower threshold then straight talking.

My mom got fired from her job for a very similar situation - not sexual harassment, but hostile workplace - someone walked by and overheard her saying "She's such a fucking moron, I wish she'd just die so we didn't have to deal with her." Because my mom had been having performance issues with one of her subordinates, they presumed she was talking about said subordinate (who was at lunch). While camped on my couch and looking for a new job, she told me she was actually talking about the boss' wife (who was trying to get her husband to work less, at the expense of everyone else working more), but she couldn't really say that to her boss.

I had remarkably little compassion (except for supporting her ass for the next 18 months) and was all "Well, i guess you won't wish death upon people at your next job."

Wow, must be nice living in YOUR world. Some jobs are careers, some come with damned good health and retirement benefits that have been worked for and earned for years, so yes, MY delicate sensibilities sometimes WILL take a backseat to assholes. Because if you quit that sweet job and move onto the next one, you're going to find that THAT job has its own set of insensitive assholes because they're EVERYWHERE.

But, like you said, most people understand that this is shitty, and that a job where customers and coworkers are expected by management to behave with decency is superior. They don't try to make people feel foolish or weak for preferring a job where they aren't expected to just accept any behavior at all.
