Fanfic trends that cross all fandoms
(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 01:17 am (UTC)(link)What are some examples of such trends and cliches and patterns you've noticed and been amused by?
(Bonus: a parody fanart demonstrating an example of one such trend:

Re: Fanfic trends that cross all fandoms
(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 01:30 am (UTC)(link)I'm kinda sick of people glorifying American soldiers and military tactics. Especially when they have to knock 100 IQ points off regular canon characters and nerf their technological capabilities in order to do it.
On the other hand I also have noticed an upkick, and still hate, fanfics with "[Ridiculous OC Name] was a pregnant teenager who...[fandom]"
I suppose the eventual outcome will be a fanfic with [Ridiculous OC Name] was a heavily pregnant teenage US Marine who slaughtered her way to become Queen of the Care Bears sat upon a throne of skulls...actually I would read the hell out of that one.
Re: Fanfic trends that cross all fandoms
That honestly sounds like the very best kind of crack. So imaginative!

Female OC paired up with hottest male canon character. I bet you you could find this fic in every singe series with more than a handful of fics to its name. (I get that this is just escapism and there's nothing wrong with it, but I never did this even as a kid so it kind of wigs me out.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 04:18 am (UTC)(link)Well that and, like you I'm long past my high school days.
Re: Fanfic trends that cross all fandoms
I don't know how much I'd enjoy a college AU either, but at least it would be something remotely original and probably a fair bit more engaging. What I'd give for the next Persona game to be set in a college or -gasp- an office instead of a high school, I can't even describe. I am so, so sick of high school shit. Doesn't help that it seems like that was the "best time of your life!!!111" only for the very worst sort of person. Even the jocks/popular kids weren't also colossal dickbags enjoyed college or early adulthood (travelling! money! independence!) more.
Re: Fanfic trends that cross all fandoms
(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 04:36 am (UTC)(link)While I talk about a hypothetical college AU, I'm not sure I've ever actually... read one yet. (Are they out there?) It would be something new at least and I agree, I'd looove one for Persona 5 - there's even more possibilities than the previous games' HS setting imo, and again, it's more relatable for me! 'best time of your life' has always sounded like bullshit. HS has a few good moments in an otherwise meh existence, but I loved both my post-secondary schools way more.

Re: Fanfic trends that cross all fandoms
I'm guessing this one you mention is actually good?
Re: Fanfic trends that cross all fandoms
Is it good?
Re: Fanfic trends that cross all fandoms
And I wouldn't know if it's good. I haven't read it. I'm a firm believer in the idea that it's not what you write, so much, but how you write it. I said that "rarely are they [CSAU] great." That means some are actually great. Most are just okay. Others are bad. Yet, they're all the same premise. It's the author who turns it into something good or bad by virtue of their own writing. Look at Jim Butcher. He wrote an entire series based on that idea. He bet someone that it wasn't about the idea but how that idea was written. He said he could turn not only one bad idea but two bad ideas into a good series. The other person who was betting him gave him two "bad" ideas. I think they were Pokemon and the lost roman legion. The Codex Alera series was born and let me tell you, it's very good. Very popular. So Jim Butcher won the bet.
Your story will be good if you write it that way. Good luck.
