Panic room. Lets say somebody's breaking into your house. That thing is reinforced (and note all the locks) you get in there and shut it up.

More complex ones have amenities for prolonged survival inside, or may have intercom or phone systems to call for help.

Save the locks, that is exactly what the bathroom in my basement looks like. The previous owners had it plumbed at some point in the 40 years they owned the house - it's not original to the house.
