But that is the way of the history of the world. I think today we have been conditioned to expect help (from our parents or the government) that we have no coping skills when things get tough. What did our grandparents do before there were things like welfare and other forms of government aid? What do people in third world countries do? It's hard to imagine and someday, when/if society implodes we may be forced to face some extremely harsh realities.

Very simple: they got sick and they died.

And no, there is nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it because your boss cut your hours or your company switched to those paycard things whose fees eat up almost 20% of your very tiny paycheck or some other nonsense.

I am sick and fucking tired of people demonizing the poor for being poor. You want someone to blame? Blame the fucking cheapskate employers who pay their workers shit and cut benefits so the company brass can get that $3 million bonus at the end of the year.

You and the AYRT have a point.

On one hand, many of us live in cultures that demonize being poor. We do live in shitty systems that often make even surviving day to day difficult, and yes, there are absolutely people who struggle just to make ends meet. I don't think anyone is denying that.

On the other hand...there is a big difference between being in that situation, and needing to beg people to help you pay rent after spending a lot of money on things like merchandise or a cosplay outfit. And unfortunately, people in the latter situation are starting to outnumber people in the former situation, which is why some people are starting to get upset with this trend in the first place.

Except AIRT, who flat-out did deny it.

We might just interpreting things a little differently, then. I didn't see anything saying that it is a poor person's own fault if they are poor, and that wasn't the implication I took away from what they said. The implication I took away was that a lot of people have no idea how to cope with hardship because they have been coddled and/or conditioned to always expect help, to the point of not knowing what to do when that help is gone.

What the hell other way is there to interpret this:

*tbh, I don't really get how people have the audacity to ask strangers to pay their rent for them. It's a regular, monthly payment and if you haven't got your finances together, that is your fault

Because there's a difference between being in a shitty situation vs not knowing how to budget. This may be a regional or cultural difference, but for me "having your finances together" isn't automatically about being rich or poor, but about knowing what to do with your money. You can be making rent and not having your finances together, and be having trouble making rent even after having your finances together. "Having one's finances together" means budgeting/knowing how to budget and actually applying that knowledge to your life, not being wealthy/able to make ends meet/"not poor".

If you get suddenly fired from your job and couldn't get savings because the job paid so low, then this isn't a matter of having finances together, because you probably could budget, but now simply don't have a budget to actually work with. On the flip side, if you have a budget to work with but won't (i.e. spending hundreds of dollars on figurines instead of paying the bills first), then that's an issue of having your finances together - or rather, not having it together.

Ah, splitting hairs. The best admission ever of "I don't have an argument that won't make me sound like an asshole."

Not reading the comment. The best admission ever of "I don't want to even think about anything that may change my mind"

Actually, considering we're all from different places and cultures on this here thread, it's really just an admission of "that phrase seems to mean different things to us, here's what it means to me, does it mean something else for you?".

Like I said, splitting hairs. A clear sign you've lost but don't want to admit it because you'll look like an asshole.

Are you aware you're the one who looks like an idiot here? Or are you just a troll?

Uh, no, because I don't look like a privileged dickwad who hates poor people.

Well, I'll admit you've lost so you don't have to. How's that?
