It does seem to be the token "see, she's a woman after all!" trait--a character who so far has been an emotionless robot is presented with an infant, and suddenly she starts cooing over it. (One of the little things I loved in Pumpkin Scissors* was that when all the main characters were trying and failing to take care of a foundling, the female lead was among those who didn't know how to properly handle it--the one who managed to get it to stop crying was actually the seven-foot-tall anti-tank trooper.)

* Yes, that's the name of the show, Pumpkin Scissors. It actually kind of makes sense when they explain it ten episodes in.
