I'm kinda ticked off

I'm kinda ticked off at the idea that being "maternal" or a mother is a negative trait, a sign of weakness. That you can't be badass and also a mom.

A lot of you must really not be proud of your moms.

It does seem to be the token "see, she's a woman after all!" trait--a character who so far has been an emotionless robot is presented with an infant, and suddenly she starts cooing over it. (One of the little things I loved in Pumpkin Scissors* was that when all the main characters were trying and failing to take care of a foundling, the female lead was among those who didn't know how to properly handle it--the one who managed to get it to stop crying was actually the seven-foot-tall anti-tank trooper.)

* Yes, that's the name of the show, Pumpkin Scissors. It actually kind of makes sense when they explain it ten episodes in.

Yeah, and those same people who bitch about a woman character wanting to be a mother wouldn't bat a lash at a male character wanting to be a father. Now, making 'I wanna have babeez' be one of said character's main personality traits is irritating as hell, but I've seen some people who seem to think that a female character having any kind of empathy or rapport with children is somehow a token 'weak female' trait.

I wouldn't call it a "negative" trait so much as overdone to hell and back, to the point where it feels like an obligation for being a woman, or that women only feel truly "fulfilled" in their lives after getting pregnant / having children.

It's an attitude that persists in real life and fiction, and some people just get entirely sick of it.
Children do not work for everyone.
Variety, PLEASE.

I must be lucking out since I've manage to find a bunch of books over the years that didn't have motherhood as the goal for the main female characters.

I read a lot of fantasy - maybe the trend isn't as prevalent in that genre.

That...

...Isn't even remotely close to why people are annoyed about "maternal" traits cropping up in female characters.

I am proud of my mum.

I just hate it being implied that I fail as a person because I never had a child, and don't intend to ever have one.

Mum doesn't mind that I have no intentions of giving her grandchildren.
