I wouldn't call it a "negative" trait so much as overdone to hell and back, to the point where it feels like an obligation for being a woman, or that women only feel truly "fulfilled" in their lives after getting pregnant / having children.

It's an attitude that persists in real life and fiction, and some people just get entirely sick of it.
Children do not work for everyone.
Variety, PLEASE.

I must be lucking out since I've manage to find a bunch of books over the years that didn't have motherhood as the goal for the main female characters.

I read a lot of fantasy - maybe the trend isn't as prevalent in that genre.
