Having a fallback at home was incredibly valuable for me when I was learning how to be outside again after a complete breakdown. But so was having people who took my hand and dragged me outside, to things pleasant and unpleasant until I could stumble out on my own.

I think it's up to the individual person to decide how to use the general fandom safe space. Fandom friendships that are modeled on this safe space would worry me though.
