I think the relevant term here is "systematic desensitization." If you're someone who can't interact with the outside world, a "safe space" allows you an avenue of retreat during your first attempts to go outside. But you need to keep trying to go outside, slowly and surely armoring yourself against the pain, and anyone who wants you to stay inside forever is an enabler.

This, very much so.

In DBT (dialectical behavior therapy), which is basically trying to learn a skill set for dealing with stress and crisis, one short-term coping skill is described as a mental "vacation" (it's one of several and not the only one to use), and it's just what it sounds like: leave the situation, spend some time elsewhere, maybe have a small indulgence (mani or pedi, tasty drink or snack, short massage).

But the text emphasizes that it must be SHORT. You can't live on vacation.

Having a fallback at home was incredibly valuable for me when I was learning how to be outside again after a complete breakdown. But so was having people who took my hand and dragged me outside, to things pleasant and unpleasant until I could stumble out on my own.

I think it's up to the individual person to decide how to use the general fandom safe space. Fandom friendships that are modeled on this safe space would worry me though.
