I think some people made a relatively big deal over it not being a remake or an adaptation.

Wait you mean it wasn't an adaptation of Evangelion? How could anyone dislike it? It had giant robots beating up giant monsters, and there was also Ron Perlman.

There were mecha movies and shows before Evangelion.

/no one talks about Robotech anymore...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Or like a million other shows, really. I mean, it was a pretty old genre already.

How in the fuck did you take evangelion from that

For one thing, the male lead actually was pretty sure of himself and had a fully functional spine and pair of testicles.

And when the girl was unconscious, the male lead didn't jerk off over her! Not even a tug!

srsly? The first commercial I saw, Evangelion rip-off was my immediate thought.

I haven't seen the movie yet.

Have you actually watched more mecha shows than Evangelion? o.O

Re: How in the fuck did you take evangelion from that

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The creators are giant fans. The entire movie is a homage to the genre. There are going to be references and similarities when they're both movies about giant robots beating up aliens

DA

Giant fans of the genre, you mean? Del Toro had to post that he'd never seen Eva.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
But the main script writer is a major fan of Evangelion, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of it snuck through.

(not that I can really tell, Evangelion bored me so beyond people in robots fighting aliens i'm not gonna see the overlaps)

Well, yes, because movie trailers are 100% accurate at conveying the details of a story rather than the broad strokes.

As somebody who watched it, I didn't.

Though as anon already said, i wonder how much mecha stuff you actually watched. It's got a more gundam meets voltron feel if I had to pick stuff you'd at least have heard of.

And Sym-Bionic titan more then any of those.

And the robots were actually robots, and not bullshit cyborg plot devices. And there were actually characters that were likeable.

Because it was pretty much the exact plot of the Live Action Evangelion movie they've been talking about for years, and pretty much the same world. They just did a standard anime to movie adaptation, brushed out the judeo-christian symbols, aged up the characters for the US market (male lead, and I'm assuming you don't mean Idris Elba) was pretty wangsty due to the loss of his brother for a bit, quiet Japanese girl with unhealthy relationship with her substitute daddy, couple of other Eva Jaeger pilots of whom one was an arrogant hotshot with mommy daddy issues and thought she was best with the fancy mech but turned out to be second best... Come on, how can you not have seen it?

" (male lead, and I'm assuming you don't mean Idris Elba) was pretty wangsty due to the loss of his brother for a bit"

Wait...so being sad that you lost a family member is being "wangsty?" Holy crap.

And wait...when did we see him being "wangsty" anyway? The time jumps right after the battle. By the time we see him again, he's pretty well-adjusted. Yeah, he's not as gun-ho and reckless as he was when he was younger and he does talk about his brother when it's relevant, but he doesn't dwell on it or his manpain--he's more focused on the people around him.

quiet Japanese girl with unhealthy relationship with her substitute daddy

And what about their relationship was unhealthy? He was her father and her teacher. And...and that was about it, really. Nothing unhealthy about it, just an atypical family.

Calling it the same thing as Evangelion is like calling Star Wars and Star Trek the same thing. Yes, the trappings are the same, but they're not about the same thing. Eva was about despair, and a whole lot of it. Pacific Rim was about hope and human connection.

Star Trek and Star Wars are basically the same though. Farm boy screws up a lot but blunders his way to being a galactic hero and has his elder mentor die by the hand of an arch-enemy oh and one of his co-stars is a much better actor and goes onto to a higher level of fame.

And things go pew-pew.

And they both have really annoying comedy side kicks. In Star Wars it is C3Po, in Trek it is Simon Pegg.

Perhaps because Pacific Rim wasn't a big pile of self-indulgent psychobabble wrapped around absurd interpretations of Christian mysticism, with the occasional giant cyborg thrown in.

Haha! Yeah!

Other than having giant robots fighting large creatures, I don't see what the Evangelion has in common with Pacific Rim. There's plenty of old school giant robot shows that Pacific Rim draws from, including the old Godzilla films and even Cloverfield.

quiet Japanese girl with unhealthy relationship with her substitute daddy

How was their relationship unhealthy?

Re: How in the fuck did you take evangelion from that

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I thought their relationship was really lovely. What issues there were were actually totally understandable and sympathetic, and they were otherwise respectful and supportive of one another. Wtf is unhealthy about that?

Also they didn't fuck
