Well, to be fair, Sam evidently did need to drink demon blood to destroy Lilith. And wanting to sacrifice a virgin isn't as incompatible with being a good guy on SPN as it would be on some shows.

...in hindsight, that whole virgin thing was a pretty high-stakes bluff from Ruby, since if they'd gone along with it the free-Lucifer plan would have been seriously derailed.

High stakes bluff or a hint of her true colours? I vote the latter, because it could have been a setup either way.

Or... sacrificing that virgin under those particular circumstances they were in might've opened one of the seals. Sixty-six seals, infinite combinations, y'know?

But would it have counted? The first seal hadn't broken yet, so I don't think breaking any of the others would work.

I agree that sacrificing a virgin is in line with Ruby's true colors, but neither killing herself and Lilith (if the spell worked) or destroying Sam's trust in her (if they tried the spell and it didn't work) at that point in time would have been in line with her long-term goals
