I have a pet peeve of when people pronounce Maryland like Mary-Land. It's pronounced like "Marilyn" with a barely there, whisper of a "d" at the end.

I might take you up on that offer to visit. Your town names may be borked, but I loved living in Tennessee anyway. :)

Near Fayetteville, about an hour directly north of Huntsville. It was the exact center of absolutely nowhere and it was lovely. Stars out every night and a waterfall just off the back of our field... I admit it, I'm a total country mouse. I miss that place.

Well, some place names, you just have to know how to pronounce because they don't follow any real logic (see also: almost all something-shires in Britain).

In Virginia, there are ton of places like that. Most of them named after English places. (Funny that you should mention Britain.) Then coupled with the Virginia accent, yeah, it's not hard to tell who is a native and who is not.

Like;
Norfolk = Naw'fuk
Suffolk = Saw'fuk
Portsmouth = Por'smith

They have a thing with weird pronounciations.

Worcestershire is a gem. ~> woos-tər-shər

Plymouth is something like plimyth/plimuth

Same with Melbourne; Americans invariably pronounce it Mel-born. It's meant to be Mal-burn Mel-burn or Melb(schwa)n.

OT but - please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks the term "schwa" always sounds so very adorable.
