I've been peeing very frequently lately, every few hours or so, when I used to be able to go up to 8 hours without even noticing a need to pee. I think I might be diabetic, even though I'm under 25 and no family members have it. However, I am very sedentary, my BMI is almost 25, my waistline is 37 inches, and I don't even come close to a healthy diet. Yes, I'm going to ask a doctor, but for now, any preliminary opinions? How likely do you guys think it might be? Anyone with diabetes here who can share some of the things they noticed before being diagnosed?

change your diet and stop drinking so much fucking mountain dew

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I only drink diet soda, actually (which people like to argue is actually less healthy, but whatever, it's what I grew up with).

If you suspect you have diabetes, cut back on diet soda and drink plain water until you can see a doctor. Cut back on sugar, period, since it could make your blood level go dangerously high.

You can try switching to water. Whether or not diet pop is better or worse than regular is up for debate, but both types of pop are worse than water. Avoid fruit juice, too. Also, 15 minutes a day of exercise is shown to have positive effects on controlling one's blood sugar in general.

Definitely see a doctor and get your blood sugar tested as soon as you can. The frequent urination + unusual thirst are very common signs of diabetes. Tell your doctor about the tingling, too.

What makes you think that the frequent urination is due to diabetes? It's also a very common symptom of a UTI. (And is the primary symptom I get; I don't get the pain/burning sensation when I pee symptom at all.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, because I don't get any pain or other symptoms...so I guess. It's been a really long time since this started though, probably about a year or more.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
If this were diabetes, or at least a severe form, you'd have had other symptoms. A girl I know had to be rushed to the ER only days after the symptoms started.
But check with your doctor anyway, it could be anything from renal dysfunction to UTI.

There are other things it could possibly be. Have you noticed any other signs of potential diabetes (like fatigue, increased hunger or thirst, blurred vision, tingling in your extremities, dizziness, weight loss, etc.)?

And I was totally supposed to be anon for the first comment. Oh well, everyone can have TMI about my UTIs. :P )

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm always tired (though I can trace this back to my first year of high school), and have been more thirsty (or at least crave water more). I also get really tingly when I've been asleep for too long, but in my whole body, bot just hands and feet. (Mostly my face, actually.) Nothing else that I can think of offhand, except I'm not gaining weight despite all my eating, so maybe that's weight loss and it's just less obvious because it's being counteracted.

If you're eating more than usual and are more thirsty, maybe it could be a possibility? I really don't know, as I'm not a doctor. Good luck with figuring it out! As you've been at least a year with the symptoms, hopefully it likely isn't too serious?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely different anon, but damn I tick 4 of those 6! I think it's probably just all side effects from my other meds though...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
jfc anon please tell me there are other possibilities because I've noticed I've been having a similar problem.
My diet is not entirely healthy either, but it's more of an issue of big portions than unhealthy food because I rarely ever drink soda or much fast food.
I thought it was an incontinence problem when I could talk to a doctor.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's plenty of other possibilities, I guess I just singled out diabetes because I'm fat and pessimistic.

Do you drink a lot of caffeine? Or a lot of liquid in general?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
...that's...quite a leap.

Just, change up your diet or something. Drink less soda, more water. 'cause really it just sounds like a urinary infection or something up with your bladder. try and tack how often you pee per day? cause generally as you get older your bladder wants you to go more often

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
How much liquid have you been drinking? More than you used to?

Do you work or go to school? I find that when I'm at work, I only need to go about once every four to six hours. When I'm at home, I drink more iced tea and go to the bathroom every couple hours.

When you are experiencing frequent need to urinate, is it in the time before you take a poop? Having a full colon can put pressure on the bladder and make you feel the need to pee more often.
