Re: It's that time again (non-fandom confessions)

I've known my best friend for 15 years and I have no idea how her parents want me to address them. I've always just...talked in their direction.

Haha. I'm like that with my parents-in-law.

same!

I get the impression they wanted me to call them 'mom and dad' but... a) I have a mom and a dad and the idea of acting even in a kitschy way like I'm a sibling of the person I do the D with is creepy to me, b) my parents call their inlaws by their first names and c) they call THEIR inlaws by their first names

and yet when I use their first names they both kind of waiver like I'm being unspeakably rude and when they refer to each other as 'mr./mrs. surname' which is... really fucking rude to me since they don't do that to literally anyone else and uh I am mrs surname too thx

Can't go wrong with sir/ma'am. And if they don't like it, they will correct you. But I grew up in the South, so I probably use Sir/Ma'am more than most people. It is like...my default names for older people and people in positions of authority.

German anon here doesn't know how to adress old friends of my parents who keep addressing me with the familiar version of "you" even though I'm in my twenties. I've known them for a long time, but I don't know them well. I don't want to use the informal "you" but the formal "you" would be even more awkward.

same in my language

people in school addressing our teachers with the informal second person always threw me off

Ask them to refer to you as "Sie" and watch their funny reaction ;)

I have been very tempted, several times, especially in the case of people I don't like. But it's not worth the hassle.

Haha, I had a friend in high school and her mother hated being called Mrs. Friend'smom, but I was raised that you don't call adults by their first name, that it's impolite, so I just called her 'Friend's Mom' jokingly, and she called me 'Friend's Friend' back. XD

I'm almost twenty-three and I still call my friends' parents "[friend's name]'s Mom/Dad."
