I tend to watch/read a little bit of everything ever, depending on budget and availability. I think the earliest-made film I've seen was from 1913 (Fantomas). But while I maybe agree with you on the innovative thing (there's a strong argument for recombining elements in innovative ways), I don't really on the 'this is how they're discovering things?' part. Mostly because half the stuff I've watch I stumbled across in really odd ways.

I discovered an awesome Russian historical drama via a slash vid on youtube, and things like Festivids introduce me to a lot of random sources (old horror movies, especially). I discovered most of the crappy B-movie sci-fi I've watched via late-night TV at four in the morning (Logan's Run, anyone? Or Battle Beyond the Stars). I discovered a decent portion of the anime I've watched via link-hopping on youtube or TV tropes or via fandom recs, or from whatever random DVDs showed up in the video store (Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Martian Successor Nadesico). The reason I watched my first silent film was because it came as a free DVD with a newspaper, and the second because the college library had the DVD.

People find shit however they find shit. What matters is whether or not they like it and why.

Oh man, now I want to watch Logan's Run again. I should probably just buy it.
