Is there anyone in the world who said that Pacific Rim was innovative? I loved it and I would never in a million years describe it as innovative. Something can be good without being at all innovative, you know.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think some people made a relatively big deal over it not being a remake or an adaptation.

Socially Innovative =/= Cinematically Innovative

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-09-15 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have seen some people call it innovative, but that was usually in reference to the characters rather than the movie itself. i.e. female lead who does something other than be a sidekick and romantic interest, emotionally aware and self-secure male lead, familial dynamics, etc. - some of those are relatively innovative, especially given both the genre and the typical audience.

Relative, perhaps, being the keyword here.

I don't think anyone claimed Pacific Rim was innovative, but that doesn't mean it isn't good or fun to watc.

Ugh. Star Trek Into Darkness was about the worst sci-fi movie I've ever seen, but try telling that to anyone under any circumstances. That movie has some weirdly rabid fans that don't appear to be in fandom.

What mecca movies?

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-09-14 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, it's not some super special innovative groundbreaker, no, but it's not like there's all that many mecha movies in the west to begin with.

I've never heard anyone call Pacific Rim or Into Darkness innovative and there's nothing wrong with enjoying a movie that isn't.

And I don't see why it matters how someone is introduced to something; if they enjoy it they might be intrigued enough to check out similar movies, or in Star Trek's case the various tv series. Isn't more fans a positive thing?

I don't think Pacific Rim is innovative. But I do think it did have really awesome Kaiju/Jaeger fight scenes in it.

With Pacific Rim, I was just happy to see a movie with mecha that wasn't staring Shia LaBeouf. The fact that I loved the cast, didn't hurt.

I'm sure a huge portion of the fanbase has definitely been around long enough to have enthusiastically loved plenty that existed before 2000. In fact I think it's being affectionately given a pass for ripping off a lot of other things because it didn't try to hide that it was one big fanboy homage.

Secret 1 - Movies, Pacific Rim, Star Trek Into Darkness

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-14 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a poster of the movie "Pacific Rim", showing the arm of a giant robot/mecha/Jaeger against a frozen area, while two people lean back in shock several feet away.]

Between this and Star Trek Into Darkness, I feel like I've spent my Summer actively keeping myself from telling everyone to GO WATCH SOME MOVIES MADE BEFORE THE YEAR 2000 JESUS FUCKING CHRIST YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT INNOVATIVE EVEN MEANS.

It pains me that these movies are how people discover mecha movies and Star Trek.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I...kinda feel you on the Star Trek part? I mean, normally I'm not fussed about it but...I really didn't like that it was basically a remake of Khan [a movie that was *awesome* and really, really didn't need a remake] and I really don't like Abrams take on Star Trek. Like...at all. Something about the "For people like me" after admitting that he wasn't fond of the philosophical part of the series...even though that was a huge part of it.*

*Yes, I know he said "until I hit after starting the project" but um...That was after he made calls about the series and seems to have stripped most of that element from it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)

Innovative? What?

I didn't like Star Trek but I liked Pacific Rim. Maybe I just liked PR because I liked it and it was fun. I'm not gonna get down on someone who liked Star trek. Why must we all piss on each other for not having the same tastes? This is some of the stupidest elitist bullshit ever.

I tend to watch/read a little bit of everything ever, depending on budget and availability. I think the earliest-made film I've seen was from 1913 (Fantomas). But while I maybe agree with you on the innovative thing (there's a strong argument for recombining elements in innovative ways), I don't really on the 'this is how they're discovering things?' part. Mostly because half the stuff I've watch I stumbled across in really odd ways.

I discovered an awesome Russian historical drama via a slash vid on youtube, and things like Festivids introduce me to a lot of random sources (old horror movies, especially). I discovered most of the crappy B-movie sci-fi I've watched via late-night TV at four in the morning (Logan's Run, anyone? Or Battle Beyond the Stars). I discovered a decent portion of the anime I've watched via link-hopping on youtube or TV tropes or via fandom recs, or from whatever random DVDs showed up in the video store (Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Martian Successor Nadesico). The reason I watched my first silent film was because it came as a free DVD with a newspaper, and the second because the college library had the DVD.

People find shit however they find shit. What matters is whether or not they like it and why.

People who think Pacific Rim is terrible sci-fi

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-09-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Watch Plan 9 From Outer Space, and once you're done vomiting your intestines out, laughing your face off, scrubbing your brain, and washing your eyeballs, get back to me.

Oh, and this applies to people who thought STID (that sounds like a sexually transmitted disease) is the worst science fiction movie ever, too. I mean, you don't have to like it (I don't), but if you think it's the worst, you're either really naive or really lucky.

This is right up there with people complaining about folks who discovered Sherlock Holmes via Sherlock (or Elementary or the Guy Ritchie movies) as if reading and enjoying Doyle's original stories somehow doesn't count for as much if your impetus to read them was a newer and/or non-traditional adaptation. Or people people complaining about those who only got into Doctor Who with the new series, and so on. It's elitist and silly to act like how or when people discover things determines how true a fan they are.

The first Star Trek movie I saw in a theater was The Voyage Home, but you know what? Not everyone is old enough for that to have been their first Trek movie. I'm not old enough to have seen Star Wars when it first came out in theaters. Most Batman fans alive today weren't around reading Batman comics in 1939. No one alive today was reading Sherlock Holmes stories in 1887. Give people a break for not having had an easy chance to discover something until the shiny new version came out.

Lol. I'm almost thirty years old, so I've seen a hell of a lot of movies from 'before the year 2000', and I thought Pacific Rim was fucking wonderful. And in some ways, yes, a little bit innovative. It rolled with and had a ton of fun with the tropes it was using (which is not at all a bad thing), but it also brought in some ideas that Hollywood seldom touches on, and that were really refreshing. No it wasn't deep and philosophical, but that's... not what innovative means.
