Ugh. Star Trek Into Darkness was about the worst sci-fi movie I've ever seen, but try telling that to anyone under any circumstances. That movie has some weirdly rabid fans that don't appear to be in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's divisive on both sides, really. There's a lot of people who hated it and can't accept any praise of it, and a lot of people who really liked it and can't accept any criticism.

Personally, I didn't care for it, and thought it was pretty bad. But people seem to be way too invested in it one way or the other.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - Oh good, it's not just me. I was meh - it had some fun scenes, but I don't love or hate it. I don't think I'd watch it again though.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed on that. It's kind of the movie I just don't talk about.

The ones that priase it are praising it for the soft core titty scene and the pew-pew-pew shoot 'em up parts. Same as any action movie. People that turned up to see a movie tell an actual story all slated it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You can state your own opinion all you want, but that's one bullshit sweeping generalization about why anybody would have actually liked it. What about the people who turned up just to spend time with characters they loved? There are a few arguably OOC moments in the reboot films but you can still get a lot of kick out of the interactions and the little character moments.

Uh, yeah, no. Didn't particularly like it, didn't hate it, was part of a fun evening out with a friend.

Not sure if troll or just stupid.

My reaction to it is like 50% squeeing and 50% complaining, and this is about the same reaction it got out of a lot of fans I know. And I don't know a single one who won't accept people criticizing it. It's the Trekkies who are forgetting some of the appallingly bad ST movies of the past in order to say this one is unquestionably the worst that are being rabid.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention such masterpieces as "Spock's Brain" and "Threshold".

No kidding. I actually just watched it last night for the first time, and let's just say I had expected it to be a whole lot worse based on all the hate I've seen directed toward it. Was it flawless? Hardly. But I would watch it again, and that's more than I can say for some of the other Trek movies.

And a lot of people who thought it was worth the matinee price, and not the worst Trek writing we've seen.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
not the worst Trek writing we've seen

not disagreeing

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
not the worst Trek writing we've seen

Accurate, but there's a huge level of fail involved if acclaimed directors and writers can barely do better than cheesy science fiction films.

Meh. I didn't hate or love it. I would have preferred more Cumberbatch or Karl Urban but what can ya do?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I will second your "MORE KARL URBAN", but in general, I would have liked less action, and more character interaction. For me, that's what worked so well in the first movie, and this time around, it was like they didn't have time for it, so the little character interaction they had was shoehorned in between action shots.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Amen to "more Karl Urban". One of my favorite things about ToS was the friendship between Kirk and Bones, and it makes me sad that one of the original series' main characters has been relegated to a cameo at best. Especially when he is such an integral part of the original series (i.e. he represents the emotional and 'human' side of the Spock/Kirk/Bones trio).

Oh I wouldn't say the worst, it doesn't have Jar-jar for example, but its the worst SF movie that doesn't have a Jar-Jar Binks in it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on there has to be a worse science fiction movie than that

there are some really, really awful SF movies out there

[personal profile] bringreligiontothewamwams 2013-09-14 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah every time I think that, I go to youtube and find a clip of Jar_jar and all of a sudden the movie in question just isn't that bad any more. I remain convinced that Jar jar was designed to make the ewoks look cool by comparison.

That movie is a masterpiece in its own right.
