PEOPLE WHO ARE DEMANDING ABOUT UPDATES

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
A little while back I was dealing with stress from college and other shit plus a job. I got an angry PM from someone demanding when I was going to work on a fic of mine. I told them I would try after school finished but by then my muse had dried up and I didn't feel like anything I wrote on it was passable. I felt guilty every time I got a fave for it and I just put it on hiatus because working on it became unpleasant.

Your favorite fic writers have lives too. And sometimes our brains aren't cooperating with us. Please don't harass writers about when they're going to work on a fic. Yelling at us over it is actually a good way to make us not want to work on it.

I have a fic I've been waiting on for two years. I survived, found other things to read.

Agreed so hard. I follow a fic and there's one commenter who, if the writer hasn't adhered to their schedule (and they try to write substantial updates every two weeks AND they've been doing a Masters, for fuck's sake) posts no other review besides "It's been two weeks. You're due an update."/"Update, it's been two weeks now."

Ugh.

Oh wow that's horrible.

Readers are nice but they aren't owed chapters.

I feel admittedly a little guilty about the fact that I have ADHD and am horrible about focusing. Demands just make it worse. I know that logically being out of a job now I really have nothing better to do than fill applications and work on stuff in the meantime but my mind won't let me work on certain things. I wish i could just write when I know I should be working on the fic but....nghh

That's perfectly understandable and pestering like that is rude. I just wish that the authors would put some kind of note on the fics they haven't updated for a while. Like "I'm just taking a break, but will continue later/I've lost interest and won't continue this, sorry." Then people would know which fics to check at some later point.

I put HIATUS in caps on the summaries of works I'm taking a break on.
