Just as a clarification - and I'm sorry if I'm being presumptuous - take the auto off and do it with someone else. Never choke alone. It's magnitudes safer if there's someone else there, even if they aren't a participant. Going along with that, use hands, not ties. Even a winter scarf can knot up and get stuck, or a belt can snag, and you can't deal with that when your brain is panicking on lack of oxygen, and you can't rely on a partner not to panic, especially their first time. Hand release immediately.

Yes, it works. I find, mentally, that it doesn't work when I do it to myself; I have to receive it from another person, but other people are, of course, different.
