I love 'em. Hyperbole for the win.

On the other hand, crap like "I hope he steps barefoot on Legos" strike me as hopelessly twee or ... I don't know the word I need here. It's like those women who hang around in church groups who say shit like, "He's so confused, bless his heart" and you can hear in every word that what they really mean is "He's a shit-born cockhead for disagreeing with me, he's going to go straight to hell when he dies and I'm just going to be sitting on my cloud polishing my halo and GLOATING."

"God, I hope he takes a fucking rake to the face" just feels more honest than "step on legos."
