Or maybe he's a person who's done a shit-ton of bad things, but just doesn't want to do this one good thing?

It's not like people have a "core" of what they are "deep down" - people are fucking complex, and they can want good things and bad things in equal measure, or in any imbalance you can think of.

When writers are managing to put that on the page/actors are managing to communicate this on screen, that's awesome and an attempt to determine "good or bad" probably isn't helpful in understanding the work.
