I'll never understand "You should outgrow -insert hobby here-". You like what you like, and while your interests may change with age they don't have to. As long as your hobby isn't hurting anyone other people shouldn't care.

There's nothing wrong with deciding to leave fandom (for whatever reason), but if you want to stick around that's perfectly normal too. (No matter your age.)

We've had this discussion so many times. I think last time I asked what 'older' people were supposed to do with their free time, and someone mentioned wine tasting. (Although in that case, why not drink your wine whilst working on your big-bang?) I suppose one could take up crocheting, but if you were so inclined you could combine that with fandom too. People CAN have multiple hobbies.

It's dumb. If you enjoy fandom, stay in fandom, if you don't, leave; age has nothing to do with it.

It's funny, because I have a friend (who's in his thirties and no longer gets these) who loves wine-tasting and has a job based on that, but when he was just starting out and in his early twenties, people told him he was being pretentious and trying to justify his desire to get drunk like all other college students. Because, you know, some things are meant for young people and some things are meant for old people and THERE CAN BE NO OVERLAP WHATSOEVER!

People can be dicks, man. If you enjoy wine you enjoy wine. *shrugs* I wish I liked alcohol but it doesn't agree with my taste buds, so I kind of envy him.

I admit I don't know any wine tasters, but it's as valid a hobby as any.

I wonder if those people think you can only enjoy wine THAT much once you reach a certain age...

I get the same thing - I enjoy knitting, and always hear about how it's such a "grandma hobby." And I'm like "Hey, you know why grandmas are good at knitting? Because they started when they were my age."

Combining hobbies is the best part of having different hobbies. Playing violin? Transcribe some Transformers melodies for string quartet! Learning intarsia? Make symbols from various fandoms! Trying to cook more at home so I don't eat so much yucky fast food? Make up recipes based on foods from different series! I'm always looking for ways to be 'secretly' dorky, plus it's fun to see how many other people I meet figure out what I'm doing because they're fans too :p.

Lmao, Transformers on string quartet. That's kind of epic and I want to hear it.

I agree, it's fun to combine hobbies, and always nice when people pick up on your fannish references. It can be a good starting point for conversation and lead to new friendships and the like.

I wish I had a steadier hand because I'm super jealous of everyone who can do awesomely accurate and creative nail art. I love nail polish but I suck at doing anything complicated with it. Tis sad, because I'd love to be better at creating fandom inspired nails.

It would have been awesome if I could have gotten the string club in college to play it with me. Alas, we were more focused on learning music for a concert at the time. Stupid concerts :p.

There is some crazy good nail art out there! I don't know how people do it (or detailed face painting).

Stupid useless concerts. Do you have sheet music for it? You should record yourself and put it on youtube; you'd probably make some fans.

I'm jealous of good art in general, yea; I used to draw and while I don't think I was terrible I've never been naturally gifted like some people. Oh well, it's still fun to look at other people's creations!

There's an idea, though I'd need to find a violist and a cellist.

Yeah I try to draw too, I'm not bad but when I see good artists it just kinda boggles me. Especially when I find out they're half my age >>. It's like wtf how is it even physically possible for them to draw that well already.

I LOVE wine tastings and gallery openings and hiking and public radio and all of those other "adult" things, but I am currently watching swimming anime.

What I don't have time for is tumblr.

You have such varied hobbies! That's pretty awesome. You know what you like and it's fine if you enjoy art galleries and watch anime with hot, shirtless guys who swim too.

I don't think anyone has time for tumblr. Not even the people who use it. Lmao. Tumblr is a dangerous time waster. (Yet I still like it.)

I happen to be crocheting an afghan of Captain America's shield right now!

I sincerely hope that you post a picture of it here when you're done. Or on tumblr or somewhere; I want to see it!

That's an excellent idea, imo.

High five, anon! :D I'm currently knitting a Captain Marvel scarf for this winter. :)
