Rock on, OP!

I'm only a few years younger than you and have no shame about being in fandom. I know fans of all ages, up to their seventies!

There are healthy and unhealthy ways to do most things. I don't think staying in fandom after your 20s is about immaturity. There have always been people who loved their favorite works for their whole lives. There just happen to be people now who have grown up with the Internet -- or, in the case of older fans, lived long enough to see it.

I'm 44 and I have no intention of giving up things I find enjoyable just because a bunch of kids think it should belong only to them. The funniest part is always when they say shit like "You're old. Get a life." As though participation in fandom and a rich, well-balanced life outside of fandom are mutually exclusive.

I fade in and out of fandom. Whether I'm still around it at 80 will all depend on how I feel towards fandom and that doesn't involve 'am I too old for this?' in any way.

When we were still over on LJ, I commented on a secret once about never being too old for fandom. Some person, who was obviously still a teenager, decided to give me a hard time about that. They said their mom was the same age as me and I was pathetic for still being in fandom and not being a "real" adult. Like there's an age limit on being able to enjoy fandom and actively participating :/

All that to say, you are awesome and us "old" folks need to stick together! We'll have fun our way for as long as we want, dammit.

Secrets like this make me less terrified of getting older.

Having said that, I don't understand why anyone would "judge" old people for being in fandom. It's like any other hobby, and no one ever accuses people of being "too old" for hockey or birdwatching or tapestry weaving or whatever.

pantswarrior: Slideshow of a few different costumes of mine. (cosplay)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2013-09-15 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what everyone else is saying. The only time I start feeling like maybe I better watch myself is in cosplay. Because for example, a year ago I was invited to be part of a large cosplay group that consisted mostly of people I didn't know. The character I was going to be is canonically attracted to another character, and that character's cosplayer was, as I am, quite happy about shipping it despite the wrongness, and she was all "We can take totally sketchy pictures together! Woohoo! Chain me to the wall and stuff!" and I was like "Woooooo this will be the most wrong but awesome photoshoot ever!"

Well, I didn't make it to the photoshoot, but stayed in contact with a lot of the cosplayers involved. So then a few months later, this same cosplayer who had been suggesting taking rather suggestive pictures together was griping about how she couldn't buy spraypaint because in her home state you have to be over the age of 21.

D:

Soooo yeah, now I'm a little more cautious when people suggest taking shippy pics. I don't want to come off like I'm creeping on the young folks. XD

Secret 1 - Fandom, age

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-15 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a small old man sleeping inside a hollowed horn that is hanging from a nail on a wooden wall. There is a pillow behind his head.]

All the "I'll be in fandom till I'm 80!" comments here make me ridiculously happy. I hide my age when I'm on open forums, so sure I will be judged. Have been too.

I'm 39. I squee a lot and love all silly and smutty parts of fandom.

I'll never understand "You should outgrow -insert hobby here-". You like what you like, and while your interests may change with age they don't have to. As long as your hobby isn't hurting anyone other people shouldn't care.

There's nothing wrong with deciding to leave fandom (for whatever reason), but if you want to stick around that's perfectly normal too. (No matter your age.)

We've had this discussion so many times. I think last time I asked what 'older' people were supposed to do with their free time, and someone mentioned wine tasting. (Although in that case, why not drink your wine whilst working on your big-bang?) I suppose one could take up crocheting, but if you were so inclined you could combine that with fandom too. People CAN have multiple hobbies.

It's dumb. If you enjoy fandom, stay in fandom, if you don't, leave; age has nothing to do with it.

As kind of an offshoot from this topic, I also think the whole "fandom is for people in their teens and early 20s" thing is a concept that only really came in to being in the last decade or so. I remember when I was first starting to lurk around fandom (when I was 12 or 13, I'm 25 now), it seemed like there was kind of a mid 20s to 40s majority, and people younger than that were kind of seen as outliers/early adopters.

But now it seemed like it kind of flipped, and anyone over 30 is seen as some kind of long-haul fan or something.

I used to know a 60 year old who was in fandom. I think she particularly liked Supernatural. She never hid her age and no one cared.

I don't see why you need to hide your age. The majority of people don't care and the few who do are easily ignored.

So relax, have fun, and be yourself.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 52 and I've been in fandom since I was in my teens... edited my first fanzine at the age of 21.

I rarely say how old I am any more, though. The couple of times I did confide my age, I ended up getting a bit of ageist kickback.

I'm nobody's mother, damn it, and I really resent some of the assumptions and projections that some people have around 'older' fans.

We were at the store the other day looking at toys and my 6 year old told me it was so sad that when she was a grown up, she would have her own money but would be too old to buy toys. I said "what about Daddy? He gets a new Transformer almost every week! Is he too old to buy toys?" "Mo-om, that's different!" "What about all of my comic books and Doctor Who toys, am I too old for that?" "Mo-om, that's different!" "How is that different? We're grown ups who buy toys and play with them." six year old sigh "Ok, I guess I can buy myself toys."

So, yeah, I may be a 33 year old mom, but I don't intend to give up fandoms just because I'm a grown up. I just have to make sure my budget includes comic books for the kiddo and not just me so it will be fair. :)

me too. I'm 33 and fandom is one of my "fun things," and it will probably always be. My parents are in their 60s and love to play fantasy football. Same thing, different medium, you know?

I would love to be in fandom until I'm 80

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
But even now, I have problems adapting to new platforms and the changes in fandom trends. :/ I'm mostly here for the fic, so if fandom becomes more art heavy than fic heavy and moves to a really confusing platform, I'll probably have no choice.

Not that this is really related to the point of the secret, mind, but I'm just saying: if I'm not here in 50 years, that's why.
