Fandom ageism is the weirdest thing to me. I discovered fandom about the same time we finally got internet in my house (so '98-'99). I was 13 or 14, and it was really sad being underage when it seemed like all the cool older girls/women got to go to cons and join mailing lists that were 18+. Idk, by the time I started really interacting and writing in fanfic circles and joining LJ (back when everyone needed an invite), I was delighted by all the older women in fandom. They were the ones who acted like older sisters or even mommies and kind of looked out for everyone, and they could always afford to buy the cool merch or commission lots of fanart or whatever that they would happily show off so I could live vicariously.

Idk, maybe I'm a weirdo, but interacting with so many older women was always one of my favorite parts of fandom. :( I liked realizing that this phenomenon had been around a long time and could tell me all the "back in my day we had to do this with 'zines" stories. There were people who knew the ropes and lived real, grown-up lives while still having fun, and that made me feel like life wasn't going to end just because I grew up and got a "real" job, or that it was totally possible to be super fucking geeky and into yaoi/slash or writing fanfic or collecting stuff and still actually not end up a solitary cat lady, or that it was possible to be a very happy cat lady because that's what one might actually want out of life.

It's weird now to be 28 and maybe one of the "old" people (though I've had many a fandom friend/acquaintance who was more than twice my current age). My expiration date is fast arriving, perhaps already past, and I cannot fucking wait to put on my muumuu, collect some cats and keep cranking out stupid fluffy porny silly fanfic anyway.

As a fellow (almost, next week) 28 year old and someone who has participated in fandom since the age of 14...I love this comment. I agree with almost every word. I say almost because I prefer bunnies to cats. My fiance wants to get a dog though so I foresee a problem in my future!

I'm 27 and IAWTC. I wonder if it might have something to do with the adults you were raised by. Some teens in fandom seem to have this very fixed idea of adult success/happiness, but all of the the adults in my life have struggled financially, professionally, personally... I had no idea what my future would look like. Smart, successful and happy adults in fandom amazed me because they actually reminded me of myself- how cool is that!
