Do you guys ever find yourself explaining things that you have a relative knowledge of or are a part of online?

Last week I found myself explaining what 4chan was to my boss. Also, how the term "newfag" is used. It was kind of hilarious.

when I worked in retail my manager went around asking everyone individually what Yo-Gaba-Gaba was

I was the only one who knew

because this was once linked in the atla comm I think

yeah whenever my sister and I make internet/fandom references we inevitably have to explain it to my mother.

now she knows what a "meme" is.

My youngest brother still lives at home with my parents, but is 17, lives on YouTube, visits 4chan, and is a brony. Our conversations make sense to each other, and to my girlfriend, and for the most part to my other brother, but uhm... not so much when we're conversing in front of my parents.

The other day, I was griping about something or other, the brother chimes in with a sarcastic "THANKS, OBAMA!" and my dad looked at him like "WTF?!"

And then the other day he asked about whether he should check out Homestuck, and I think my immediate response made my mom think that the CONTENT was objectionable, so I had to explain that Homestuck itself is not necessarily an offensive horrible thing, but if you get into Homestuck, you probably don't ever want to admit to it anywhere public on the internet at this point...

That would be why I told him to stay away from Homestuck. He already gets enough crap for being a brony, and even if he didn't turn into one of "those fans" (which he probably would, knowing his social problems), he doesn't need to give people more reason for insta-hate. ;)

I have. I's normally because a cute newbie has revealed themselves before me and I am unaware they're that new so I bust out a term I think they know and then it's explanation highway from there on.

My boss will come to me to ask about anything on the internet, which makes for interesting discussions sometimes.

For example, he watches Game of Thrones but only because it's on HBO. Then we'll have discussions about random things like Gangnam Style.
