I'd suggest you tell them this. Even if it's just a "hey, how are you" message. If they don't want to talk to you, they won't talk to you. As long as you don't hound them, it's hardly out of line.

Given that the last thing they said to me was that I should stop writing to them, which I could only respect unless I really wanted to be an ass, I think any contact at all would count as hounding. So, outta luck.

Miss them, though. We were good friends for a while as well as doing some fucking brilliant roleplaying. C'est la vie.
