I feel the same way, and I'm really picky about names. Like, if the kid is named after a canon character I think the author is unimaginative (even worse if the first AND middle names are after two different canon characters), but if it's a made-up name or something exceedingly trendy with a jacked-up spelling then I can't suspend my disbelief enough to actually get into the story.

I like to pretend that the epilogue was written by some 11-year-old fan that won a contest.

Do you mean it wasn't?!

The epilogue is the only part of Harry Potter series I've read (we had them for sale at the yarn store where I worked, there was an unofficial Harry Potter Knits book, too). So I read it the morning of the release, so that anyone who asked for spoilers could get them.

It did not inspire me to read the previous 4000+ pages.

The thing about the epilogue is that it's nothing at all like the rest of the series. I really meant it when I said it reads more like a little kid's fanfiction.

Yessssssss. That epilogue just doesn't exist and those characters literally are not valid to me at all.

I'm not a huge HP fan so I wasn't invested in the ending as much as others, but that bit made me cringe.

(And OP, that's an adorable baby. Wonderful picture choice.)

I'm even picky about names in original fiction. If I don't like the name of the main character, the story has to sound spectacular for me to sit through it.

I give a little more leeway to original fiction writers, because I don't already have preset ideas that NO THIS 40-SOMETHING-YEAR-OLD COP AND HER BLUE-BLOODED LAWYER GIRLFRIEND WOULD NOT NAME THEIR KID ZAYDEN FFS. ahem Whereas with original fiction, I don't know anything about the character's parents, maybe it's not completely OOC for them to give their kid a stupid name.

But if ALL the characters have ridiculous names (and my definition of "ridiculous" sometimes depends on the setting and genre) then I'm out.
