I feel you. And in the reverse, I was once totally sold on a Leverage kidfic because Parker named her kids after precious stones or types of currency. That seemed like such a believable in-character touch for me, genius. XD

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you happen to have a link to that at all?

Nooooo. Writer 101. Never name your character's kid, be they OC or fandom preferred character's children, after gemstones/money. It's a recipe for disaster.

Lmao, that is so Parker.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
That is so very Parker - but I can't get over the mind boggle that is Parker being a parent. Just...can't really see that.

I don't have any strong feelings on this, but I like the design / concept of this secret. So well done, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I often feel the same way. Also, if the name doesn't have any kind of canon basis, I wonder if it's what the author daydreams about naming a baby in the future.

If I had a baby who looked like that all the time, I might like babies.

And I'm also annoyed when kidfic kids have names I don't agree with.

Secret 9 - Kid fic

[Picture is the photograph of a baby looking at the camera with something between curiosity and a slight pout.]

I love kidfic but I get inordinately annoyed when I don't like the name(s) the author chose for the kid(s). It doesn't ruin the fic or anything, but I keep being annoyed all throughout the fic. This kid obviously agrees with me.

OP, you can always get a word replacement add-on. The only one I know the name of is Ponify, but I'm sure there are more.

OP

Hadn't heard of that but I'll give it a try. Thanks!

That kid! Look at his wee vest and his little pocket square!

I feel the same way, and I'm really picky about names. Like, if the kid is named after a canon character I think the author is unimaginative (even worse if the first AND middle names are after two different canon characters), but if it's a made-up name or something exceedingly trendy with a jacked-up spelling then I can't suspend my disbelief enough to actually get into the story.

I'm even picky about names in original fiction. If I don't like the name of the main character, the story has to sound spectacular for me to sit through it.

I literally cannot stop laughing at how this looks like the angriest baby ever, despite how cute he is.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
That baby looks so dapper and cute! And that angry face just gave me a case of the giggles.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, for Teen Wolf, I wish people would stop naming their kids after their parents (or Laura). It's not necessarily out of character or anything, but neither is it a given (which some authors seem to treat it as). Of course, if Allison and Scott have a girl and call her Victoria, you had better be writing an AU. And if the kid is named after a still living parent, for the love of God, give them a nickname.

OH, man, me too. I got so, so, so sick of Buffy or Xander having a daughter and naming them 'Joyce'. Arrgh! Or - every daughter Sam or Dean has is named Mary. Stoppit fandom!

I personally get very bothered when kids are named after dead characters. Like in the One Piece fandom. Every time someone has Luffy name his son after his dead brother (instead of Meat or some other more Luffyish thing) or Zoro names his daughter after the dead girl whose life he's more or less been trying to live for her, it just gives me a creepy Replacement Goldfish vibe rather than the honoring of dead loved ones the author is probably trying for. And it also feels very, very lazy.

One, I love that baby.

Two, it only annoys me when they are named after 'long lost' or 'died nobly' characters. Why are you giving them so much baggage right up front?
