People are right in that Cujo was rabid, but I understand where you're coming from. There have been cases of domesticated dogs severely injuring or even killing people. It's rare, yes, but it's possible and it does happen. Even bad bites seem pretty common given how many show up on Judge Judy and other such shows. I think a lot of people anthropomorphize dogs and cats and such to the point that they forget that animals are, well, animals. There's a mind in there that as a human you cannot understand. Other people you can kind of extrapolate, but you have no idea how an animal thinks or perceives the world so anything is possible given the right circumstances and you don't know what might set it off. And given the teeth and claws, they can do some damage.

Although, you're certainly not incorrect by any means. I just wanted to point out as general rule, you are very unlikely to be viciously attacked by a dog. Most bite cases (not attacks) are generally misunderstandings between humans and dogs. The cases of unprovoked vicious attacks tend to happen with purebreds with mental genetic defects, dogs traveling in packs (especially feral), dogs with owners that train them to be vicious,and dogs with severe health issues (like Cujo). The likelihood of being attacked (or even bitten) by a healthy, neutered, single, well-socialized dog is pretty much next to nothing for all breeds.

Well-socialized is the key phrase there. I didn't get over my dog fear until I moved to a downtown neighborhood where city parks are more common than yards. My experience of suburbia, in contrast is that stepping into a dog's territorial space is like playing the lottery. And of course, all of them are "good dogs" according to their owners.

Luckily, the one encounter I've had with an aggressive dog that wasn't mediated by a fence or window turned out to be a bit comic. This massive bear of a dog on my paper route tried to savage my boot. He was thankfully pulled back by his person, but a few inches higher and it might have been a police matter.
