Well, Cujo had rabies. It's not really fair to compare that to normal, healthy (ish) dogs.

We have a Saint Bernard and she's very well behaved. I don't think about Cujo at all when I see and play with her.

Maybe it's because I grew up with animals all my life, though.

People can get rabies, too :P

Sounds like you're afraid of dogs in general.

Of course any dog that gets rabies could "go Cujo" on you. He doesn't just decide to turn on his family one day. He was rabid. Healthy dogs aren't inherently evil and aren't going to try to kill you.

And so can humans. And cats. And birds. Anything has the potential to go "cujo". Doesn't mean it will.

Secret 2 - Cujo

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-16 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the cover of the novel "Cujo" by Stephen King. It shows the muzzle of a drooling, snarling dog.]

I still think all dogs have the potential to "go cujo" on you.

Secret because: "Dogs are only as bad as you raise them to be, it's just a movie, yadda yadda".

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I always have to shake my head at people whose dislike of a particular animal makes them demonize said animal to justify their hate.

Btw, my grandma's Rottweiler got poisoned by paranoid fuckfaces who insisted she would one day just go crazy and maul a child. So excuse me if I find your attitude that all dogs are ticking timebombs to be disgusting.

Wow. SOMEONE didn't read the book.

Cujo was a good dog. The whole narrative of the book keeps hammering down that one fact. Cujo loved his BOY, and his WOMAN and even his MAN, even when the man in question hit him. It was a horrible thing that he got bit by a bat and that he hadn't been vaccinated against rabies, and that was what made him go insane. And even then, the book keeps repeating that Cujo DIDN'T want to hurt anyone, and the very last paragraph about Cujo tells us that he was always a good dog and always wanted to be good. Cujo's original owner ends up getting another dog, with all it's shots, because it was not the fault of a dog.

sigh. Sorry, I don't like dogs that much, but I hate when people make it look as if all dogs are one bad day away from killing everyone in their path.

Cujo had rabies and was implied to have been possessed by a murderer. So, no, not every dog can become Cujo overnight.

Nice troll attempt though 5/10.

Fictional dog with rabies does not equal real dog with shots and a loving home.

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2013-09-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's neither fair nor intelligent to compare the behavior of an animal infected with a virus that attacks their nervous system to that of normal, healthy animals. Did you fall asleep in health class when they went over rabies, how it spreads, and what it does? Because otherwise there's really no excuse for this secret.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
So...this troll attempt failed.

Well it wasn't really a troll attempt. I am irrationally afraid of dogs, although I believe most phobias are irrational, but it's not because of any book. The idea for the secret came when a coworker jokingly ascribed my fear of dogs to a fear of them "going Cujo", which was laughably untrue the mark and made me think of how stupid you guys would find that (because he was infected with rabies, not evil). I didn't realize people might, aside from pointing out it was stupid which I laughed along with, might in a misunderstanding think I meant any violence towards dogs. That's not the case. I may be afraid of dogs, but I don't hate them or wish them any ill will. So that's the first and last troll attempt I will make - I though it would be funny, not a cause for anger.

Night!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
...I used to work at an animal hotel. Those poor creatures can be stressed, be kennel shy, or in general just be assholes. Humans get snippy when they're stressed too.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
People are right in that Cujo was rabid, but I understand where you're coming from. There have been cases of domesticated dogs severely injuring or even killing people. It's rare, yes, but it's possible and it does happen. Even bad bites seem pretty common given how many show up on Judge Judy and other such shows. I think a lot of people anthropomorphize dogs and cats and such to the point that they forget that animals are, well, animals. There's a mind in there that as a human you cannot understand. Other people you can kind of extrapolate, but you have no idea how an animal thinks or perceives the world so anything is possible given the right circumstances and you don't know what might set it off. And given the teeth and claws, they can do some damage.

All pit bulls are a potential Cujo to me, blah blah not a real breed it's the owner, blah blah. If we can accidentally kill off any number of species Golden Toad, Baiji dolphin, Dodo Moa, for gods sake can't we get rid of pit bulls.
