Today was the same as yesterday. Worksheets and computer games. One student started cussing and refusing to do anything. Called vice prinicpal. He sat in the room and worked one on one with the boy. Great punishment. : /

Then a student got mad because of a comment the teacher made and threw his book at me, knocked over his desk, and walked out of the room. They let him hang out in the office and then let him come back.

I tried to subtlety mention getting a smart board for the class. I will make lessons for it after work even tho I won't be paid and it is not in my job. Just so the kids can do SOMETHING. He said it won't happen. Even though this school can afford laptops for half its students to take home. AND I saw a smart board in a storage room. He then admitted to me he doesn't get any support from administration. I am just going to try and get to the end of the semester.

Grab smartboard. See what happens.

Don't give up on the kids. Hang in there, and don't give up on them.

There is one REALLY good kid. I don't know why he is in the ED classroom. He quietly does his work and never causes trouble. He is a below grade level, but I don't know why they didn't just put him in an LD room (or give him some tutoring). When the other kids start fighting and acting up, he just gets so terrified (he also hates when they make noise when he is trying to work).

Two of the other students are fairly well behaved as well. They quietly do work then nap.

The other three are the bane of my existence. I am going to try and research ways to deal with kids that won't do ANYTHING you say, without resorting to begging. My teacher has no authority in the classroom, so it is very hard for me to eek out some.

When the other kids start fighting and acting up, he just gets so terrified (he also hates when they make noise when he is trying to work).

And that would be why he's in the ED class, probably.

Being afraid when other kids start fighting (why wouldn't he be afraid when two aggressive boys twice his size start fighting) and getting aggravated when his classmates are making noise/talking when he is trying to work (don't most people?), are no where on the same level as the students who refuse to do work, cuss, and try to fight about EVERYTHING.

Depends on the level of the noise, but if it's something that's regular most people start tuning it out after a while.

Also, if it's your second day [or even just not that far in as a whole] there's a good chance there's something going on with him that you haven't been there long enough to see.

I normally do my lessons with low tech stuff. Maybe you can get through a small lesson with that?

But your situation sounds horrible and I feel so sorry for those kids.

There's always a few troublemakers that frustrate you into fits. I feel for you. I find deal making works best for me. Instead of being hard about saying no I normally say, "What if we did _______ instead and then we do [insert thing they want here]." Then I sweeten the deal by saying why that's better. I also normally offer to help them.

This sounds horrible but giving a kid the illusion of choice really makes things easier on you.

But I know that doesn't always work. I really do with you the best of luck.

ED? So it's like special education, but not for mentally handicapped kids, right? A lot of the time kids end up in there because they're too lazy to do any work/have severe anger issues. Sometimes, you just can't help these people.

Right now I just feel like an assistant babysitter.

Yeah, I'm sorry you're going through that. I grew up in MA, and I knew quite a number of kids that just didn't want to do anything and ended up isin a special education class. The worst one I can remember is the goth guy who snuck knives into school and talked about cutting himself with heated scissors. Not the best environment to learn in
