God only in fandom can someone's FANFIC PORN preferences be an indication of their moral character.

Except that shipping two characters doesn't need to involve porn at all. To some people it just means that you think character A and character B would make for a great couple.

"I can't fap to it so it's useless to me" is a very douchy mindset.

I get that, I see that to a lot of people shipping is a large part of how they interact with works. To me it really isn't, and as you said that's what shipping means to "some people". Since we're talking about judging everyone by this standard, is it really fair to call the rest of us shallow because we don't see the appeal?
I enjoy a lot of things outside of a fandom context, and romantic relationships are usually not my focus. I don't really get what "I can't fap to it so it's useless to me" means. I read a lot of gen. And things that aren't fanfiction! I just have no use for shipping outside of the few non-canon dynamics that catch my imagination.
