That's not homophobic, it's just shallow.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how I see it as well.
I'm 99% gay but even I ship het sometimes. And yes, I even skip the sex scenes in fic (sexy or porny art is fine somehow).
Just because I don't get off to it doesn't mean I can't enjoy a pairing.

Not really?

Assuming shipping means "really being a dedicated fan of a pairing" and not just liking the way a story is going.

On top of that, a lot of people just aren't into shipping to begin with. They might just have a couple, or one, or none! Are these people shallow? Or just not, y'know, weird like us?

Dude, we're weird. That's okay, but shipping is inherently weird. Don't hold other people to your weirdness standard.

I fail to see how this comment is relevant?

In this context being shallow is not necessarily a bad thing. If you're only shipping characters you find attractive, then yeah, that is shallow, but like I said, not a bad thing as long as you're not making up bullshit excuses for it. And before anyone tries to argue that it's the whole reason why shipping exists, it's not true: some of us based on factors other than that.

I'll agree with you that shipping is inherently weird, though.

Generally shallow is used as a pejorative unless there's a qualifier or it's a body of water. Must've misunderstood.

And I'm with you on the attractiveness thing. I ship fricking Homestuck characters. They aren't even detailed. Let's not even discuss Adventure Time.

disagree

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it is homophobic OR shallow. People are attracted to what (and whom) they're attracted to and shouldn't be shamed for it (as long as it's not hurting someone else, etc, etc).

For example, I'm a lesbian. I like to read femmeslash. I ship a lot of het pairings, too. But m/m ships? Yeah...just doesn't float my boat. Nothing against them, but I don't find one dick attractive, much less two. That doesn't make me homophobic or shallow; I'm just not attracted to m/m ships. Nothing wrong with that.

(Before anyone asks why I can ship het, I usually picture the male as an awesome stone butch in my mind XD).

Hey, as a straight fangirl, I'm the exact opposite version of you o/

You know, this is why I've never really understood why so many bnfs in m/m fandom are queer. I don't doubt that the majority of CONSUMERS in m/m fandom are straight, but I've noticed that CREATORS tend toward lgbt. I still don't get it, but it's not my business, I guess. At any rate, I'm grateful and appreciate all their contributions to shipping ^^

Or maybe it's a thing called personal preference.

God only in fandom can someone's FANFIC PORN preferences be an indication of their moral character.

Except that shipping two characters doesn't need to involve porn at all. To some people it just means that you think character A and character B would make for a great couple.

"I can't fap to it so it's useless to me" is a very douchy mindset.

I get that, I see that to a lot of people shipping is a large part of how they interact with works. To me it really isn't, and as you said that's what shipping means to "some people". Since we're talking about judging everyone by this standard, is it really fair to call the rest of us shallow because we don't see the appeal?
I enjoy a lot of things outside of a fandom context, and romantic relationships are usually not my focus. I don't really get what "I can't fap to it so it's useless to me" means. I read a lot of gen. And things that aren't fanfiction! I just have no use for shipping outside of the few non-canon dynamics that catch my imagination.
