That's not homophobic, it's just shallow.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how I see it as well.
I'm 99% gay but even I ship het sometimes. And yes, I even skip the sex scenes in fic (sexy or porny art is fine somehow).
Just because I don't get off to it doesn't mean I can't enjoy a pairing.

Not really?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-09-17 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Assuming shipping means "really being a dedicated fan of a pairing" and not just liking the way a story is going.

On top of that, a lot of people just aren't into shipping to begin with. They might just have a couple, or one, or none! Are these people shallow? Or just not, y'know, weird like us?

Dude, we're weird. That's okay, but shipping is inherently weird. Don't hold other people to your weirdness standard.

disagree

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it is homophobic OR shallow. People are attracted to what (and whom) they're attracted to and shouldn't be shamed for it (as long as it's not hurting someone else, etc, etc).

For example, I'm a lesbian. I like to read femmeslash. I ship a lot of het pairings, too. But m/m ships? Yeah...just doesn't float my boat. Nothing against them, but I don't find one dick attractive, much less two. That doesn't make me homophobic or shallow; I'm just not attracted to m/m ships. Nothing wrong with that.

(Before anyone asks why I can ship het, I usually picture the male as an awesome stone butch in my mind XD).

Or maybe it's a thing called personal preference.

Not really inherently homophobic, no, but if I meet someone who truly honestly doesn't even see the possibility of a same-sex pairing, that's gonna set off alarm bells. Believe it or not, some fandom "preferences" are an extension of someone's true (shitty) personality. I'm also uncomfortable if someone only ships pretty white people with each other. It's shady as fuck.

Ehhh yeah. I'm straight and get called "closed-minded" because I'm the only one in my circle that isn't crazy about slash.

Gay romance doesn't do it for me. The ships are cute sometimes but I've never come across anything that genuinely grabbed my interest or turned me on. It's too hard to relate to. Why should I need to relate to it to begin with?

Sorry gay people, I totally think you deserve equal rights but it doesn't mean I actually give a shit about your love life.

Secret 7 - Slash shipping

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is five identical angry cartoon faces: A big one in the middle, and four smaller ones in each corner of the picture.]

When I see people get in a snit because other people don't have any slash ships and call those people ~homophobes~ on that basis alone I think to myself "do you also call people phobic if they like only het[erosexual] real life porn?"

Some people only ship pairings they find personally sexually appealing. Learn to live with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm bi and I mostly ship het pairings because that's mostly what I come across in canon and, well, I tend to ship canon pairings more often than not. I've gotten the homophobic accusation before... Go figure.

The text on this could have been darker. A lot darker.

I get a bit of secondhand embarrassment at people with attitudes like that. I feel rather like "No, get off my side asshole!".

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I know this is a troll secret, but yes, people do call people phobic if they only get turned on by RL het porn. In fact, it's not even a little difficult to find someone who will accuse you if gay porn isn't your cup of tea. Just something I have noticed, and no I'm not speaking out of bitterness. Love me some swordfighting.

This is the kind of thing I'm afraid to admit. There have probably only been about one or two slash ships I've had in the past, and there are quite a few places (*cough*tumblr*cough*) where, if you say something that might possibly be interpreted as even slightly homophobic, you'll be chased off the internet.

I am fully supportive of same-sex relationships and marriages in real life. I just have a hard time relating to same-sex relationships in fiction. I understand, on an instinctive, emotional level, what attracts a woman to a man, being a straight woman myself; but I only have a shallow, intellectual understanding of what attracts a woman to another woman. I have no problems with other people shipping slash pairings, although I don't really like it when they seem to do it as more of a political statement than genuinely enjoying the pairing.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
When I see someone who only ships het, I don't think they're homophobic or in any way prejudiced. I just think it's a pity that they're missing out on so much fun ;D

if someone never ever found a single non-het pairing that they liked in any media ever? then yes, i'd probably judge them a bit and wonder if there wasn't some sort of homophobia going on.

people make all these claims about "not being able to identify with a same-sex pairing"... but it's not like gay or bi people are an alien species. they're still human. they still have the same feelings as straight people, the relationship dynamics often aren't all that different, and they still encounter many of the same issues that straight people do, plus some additional ones. what makes it so hard to identify with?

idgaf about people who are only interested in reading a certain kind of porn. that's cool, everyone has their own things that get them off. but just plain ships, even without sex involved? yeah, i judge you.

I don't get people shipping only pairings they find sexually attractive. Not saying it's "doing it wrong" or anything, but it's so different from my own experience that it just does not compute for me. Sure, I ship some pairings because they're attractive, but the majority, I ship because I think they would have an interesting dynamic and interesting experiences as a couple. But whatever, ship whatever you want.

Shipping isn't just about getting off to porn, tho. It's about personality dynamics. If you're just doing it to get off, hell fucking yeah I'm gonna judge you and think you're just using it to self-insert. At that point it's not shipping, it's sexual fantasy.
