Not really inherently homophobic, no, but if I meet someone who truly honestly doesn't even see the possibility of a same-sex pairing, that's gonna set off alarm bells. Believe it or not, some fandom "preferences" are an extension of someone's true (shitty) personality. I'm also uncomfortable if someone only ships pretty white people with each other. It's shady as fuck.

No.

"I'm also uncomfortable if someone only ships pretty white people with each other. It's shady as fuck."

Um...wow. Firstly, I'm not sure if this applies to me or not because most of the men I think of as pretty aren't generally viewed that way. And it doesn't really matter because who I find attractive and who I ship is an extension of what I like and want to see. In my three fandoms, there are exactly zero men POCs. I've shipped het in the past but the only women characters in my current fandoms are either characters I don't like (just as there are some men characters I don't like) or they are minor characters with little or no interaction with the main characters. This leaves me with white men to ship. That I find some of them pretty is a happy bonus, IMHO.

tl;dr - Lack of representation is a factor you seem to have forgotten.

Lack of representation is absolutely a factor.

But when a viable interracial ship is present in a lot of cases it's bowled over by two pretty white dudes. *shrugs*

Eyup. See: the ridiculous lack of Turk/JD in Scrubs fandom, which I'm still bitter about.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
B-but Turk/Carla are OTP :(

(Also JD was always such an ass)

Mhmm. Tony/Rhodey springs to mind in the Iron Man fandom too. And Fury/Coulson. >.> Believe me, I feel your pain.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
da, the problem is that this is STILL a representation issue. There's such a large scope and variety of white characters to choose from that almost anyone will have an opportunity to ship their "type". You don't often get that for non-white characters in Hollywood. There's less variety, they're usually bogged down to stereotypes or minor roles in the background.

That said, I do agree it's not always the case, though. I would wager a LOT of the time it does come down to race, even if it's subconscious, or a societal influence on what we perceive as attractive. It's very complicated.

Yes, it is very complicated and the big picture obviously doesn't cover ever instance ever. But when you look at the patterns in a lot of fandoms (I'll use my own as an example because that's what I know best), the interactions that would send shippers over the moon if they occurred between two white men are often overlooked. Tony Stark and James Rhodes come to mind pretty quickly. Nick Fury and Phil Coulson too.

Obviously everyone can and should ship whatever they like, but looking at the reasons why things are the way they are isn't a bad idea by any stretch of the imagination.

I knew someone was going to say something dumb like this. I knew it, and then you did, and now I feel vindicated.

gtfo. How dare my preferences not align with yours /cry

So people being predominantly attracted to their own approximate skin colour is shady.

I find that shady.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
So you're saying all people in fandom are white? ;)

I'm saying I tend to favour white guys more than other skintones. I also like dark hair more than light too.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
People sure pretend that that's the case.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
lol i've always found that weird, tbh. like not even in a sjw way, but why do so many people want to date people that look like themselves so much?? it's so boring.

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2013-09-18 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably something related to genetic sexual attraction - at least that's what I've heard. People are attracted to people more like the type they are familiar with, as in the same basic type their family is.

And it's not like being attracted to people of the same basic colouring is the same thing as being attracted to your clone.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
da, I thought it was the exact opposite... that to ensure a healthier offspring, we're hardwired to be attracted to people as opposite to ourselves as possible. Which is part of the reason why we're so naturally disgusted by incest (most of us; kinks don't count, since lots of kinks are built on the principle of "wrongness"). They've done studies where people with similar chemistry will smell bad to you whereas people with very different chemistry will smell really GOOD.

I always thought that that was why mixed race people were usually considered the most attractive people.

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2013-09-18 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Incest aversion is more that if you've spent a substantial amount of your childhood with a person, you develop a resistance to seeing them in a sexual light. It's even got an official name - the Westermark Effect.

Being attracted to someone of the same basic type... well they are still different person to those you grew up with in your family, and you haven't got the Westermark effect about them, but they are just alike enough to hit some similar=attractive reaction.

But it is by no means an absolute rule either, and people can think differing looks are attractive as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and if they started shipping PoC, you'd cry appropriation.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Your thought policing is shady as fuck

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
haha. +1

[personal profile] dazzledfirestar 2013-09-18 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, no. Honestly. Representation is the bigger problem and that MIGHT open things up on the shipping front.

Really, what you're looking at is a societal issue, not a personal one. If someone freaks out and calls interracial ships gross or whatever, yeah. Side eye away. Call 'em out. But two white dicks is not an instant KKK membership card.
