It's kind of ancient, but I loved The Incredible Machine series of games from way back when. Lots of problem solving, and a certain amount of understanding gears and basic mechanical tools. I have no idea when the last one came out, but I did see a new game by the same studio (?) advertised at PAX this year that looked pretty similar but with updated graphics.
