Hey F!S, I need some help (Video Games)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-09-17 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
So long story short I was working with a Kindergarten teacher who is super sweet and awesome. She found out I played video games and she doesn't herself but knows a lot of her kids do. She asked me for recommendations for her kids that would be educational.

I'm kinda stuck. I know about Leap Frog but she already knows that one. I thought maybe Scribblenauts but that might be too advanced for them? I don't know. I'm kind of out of my depth.

So would any of you have good recommendations? Something not mind-numbingly boring.

Seriously, anything that fits the bill. Anything.

How new are your computers. I have no idea if Thinkin' Things still makes computer games, or whoever made Spy Fox and Pajama Sam.

They're super new computers as far as I can tell. They're really integrating technology into the classrooms. Technically this is a poor district but all the kids in the upper levels are assigned iPads in the classroom. (But there are normal desktops too.)

Computer games, video games, whichever is fine. If there's a way for her to get her hands on those games and check them out that's all that's needed.

Thank you.

Humongous Entertainment! Oh man, I hope they're still making games. They were my childhood.

How does she define "educational?"

Uh, anything that helps with learning new things? Like, I thought of scribblenauts because I thought it would help with vocabulary and problem solving skills. Why? What do you have in mind? I can check it out and see if it works.

Define educational. Unfortunately most educational games are crap.

Do they still make Oregon Trail?

Anything that promotes learning? They're young so nothing too complicated. As I said to Chard, the reason I thought Scribblenauts was because I thought it would promote vocabulary and problem solving.

Unfortunately most educational games are crap.

Ugh, I know. @_@

Do they still make Oregon Trail?

They might. I'll check it out. Even if they do it may be too advanced for kindergarteners. However, the upper grades might like it.

Educational may be pushing it, but I felt like playing portal was doing my reasoning and logical thinking skills a world of good.

For the older kids that may work. Thank you.

You're not alone in thinking Portal could be a good tool for logical thinking skills. Valve thinks so, too!

http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/

Has a bunch of flash games for kids. Neopets has games for kids that kinda help them learn, like typing games and such.

Scribblenauts might be okay as long as kids can spell some words, or have an adult to help them. My friends kids love playing CandyCrush and Angry Birds, but those aren't very educational.

Thank you for the link!

They do? Interesting.

I'll keep that in mind too. Thanks for your help.

Oregon trail? When we were kids we played Amazon Trail. And...Pharaohs, I think it was called. You build an ancient Egyptian civilization, so that's educational I guess.

For kindies, though? IDK. Some Neopets games maybe. My little brothers were OBSESSED with the PC version of Frogger, although idk how educational that was. Helped with computer skills and coordination I guess.

Yeah, that might be good for older kids.

Thank you for your input. You're the second person to suggest Neopets. I'll look into their games.

I'd be careful with that

Zoombinis!!... Okay that's probably too old for them, but I maintain that it's really fun and educational, lots of puzzles and such.

My mum actually has a computer game CD for pre-school kids(if that's about the right age?) that has a bunch of CBBC character based games that are very simple and fun, one is really creepy but it's because the characters are really creepy and not the game being weird or anything. I just can't remember what the CD is called.

When I was young, I loved 'Mathblaster' and.... some kind of SimCity thing where you would build an apartment and another one with a helicopter and you would rescue people (also a sims game I think?)...um Putput and something similar with a dog...

My little sister (just finished kindergarten) plays Angry birds a lot. I'm sure there's similar games to what I played out there if she wants more modern XD

I loved Cross Country Canada and Math Circus as a kid. I don't know if they still make them but I was able to find (not really legal) downloads of both last year! :D

My brother likes Raz-Kids. It's paid but it really improved his vocabulary and reading comprehension.

It's kind of ancient, but I loved The Incredible Machine series of games from way back when. Lots of problem solving, and a certain amount of understanding gears and basic mechanical tools. I have no idea when the last one came out, but I did see a new game by the same studio (?) advertised at PAX this year that looked pretty similar but with updated graphics.

Late but...The old Lemmings [and similar] games spring to mind since they help with learning problem solving [and I *know* for a fact schools where I lived use to have them in the classroom because of that.]

As everyone else has said, Oregon Trail. The first one is pretty basic and I played Oregon Trail II when I was in third grade.

I also remember really enjoying Word Muncher and Math Muncher but this is going back 15-20 years ago (OMG how the computers have changed!)

When I got older, my mom used to buy the JumpStart games for each grade level, but I'd actually get bored with the younger levels, and played the 4th grade game from second grade on. The 4th grade one was my favorite and it had some story and you traveled around this map. I wish I could remember more but I remember there were spells and monsters.
