I kind of agree, but I also kind of still like the character and the show. I like him in all his Gary Stu-ness. It wouldn't be Stargate without him.

Daniel is totally a gary-stu, but I love him anyway. I do admit, as the show wore on though, great swaths Michael Shanks' acting could easily be summed up by "in what way can I furrow my brow today?" I just think he was bored, and probably shouldn't have come back after he left.

They offered him a giant truckload of money and prime spot in the title sequence with the coveted "and starring" billing, how is any actor supposed to be able to resist that?

I kinda agree when they turned it into Fargate though, once they had him act opposite her from Farscape, whose name I can't be bothered to look up, it was almost as if he was playing a different character entirely.

Gah .... yeah ... i agree. I still love Daniel very very much, but on the upteenth re-watch of the show the Gary Stu-ness of him is getting impossible to ignore. Also, as another anon said above ... furrowing your eyebrows is not acting. He was pretty great in the first couple seasons though!

I liked his acting and only found him over the top in later seasons but... it still didn't ruin anything for me. I just love all the characters and the show too much to say any of it was actually bad.

I agree. I liked him in the beginning, but Jonas was a welcome breath of fresh air that I still miss. When season 9 rolled around, it had turned into WSGC: All Daniel, All The Time! There used to be whole episodes about Teal'c. Where he had lines and everything!

He could be Stu-ish at times, but I still like him, and his character arc was one of my favourite ever.

I mean, I still miss original-flavor earnest optimist Daniel, but his transition to cynical bitter (but still earnest at times) Daniel was really organic and better than not having all the shit that happened to him have no effect.

I liked him in the first seasons, before he came back. He was geeky and enthusiastic and cute and he was my favorite character. When he came back he was an arrogant buffed out jerk and I came to very much dislike him. Very sad.

Awesome, a Stargate secret! But I mostly disagree. In all honesty, I haven't been thrilled with Michael Shanks in anything else I've seen him in (kind of like Joe Flanigan sorry to say), but I loved him as Daniel. More in the early seasons than the later ones, but then there was Vala, and I LOVED Vala. I still am bitter that we only got two seasons of her. And I thought the two of them had amazing chemistry, which is saying something because they had to endure some awful writing.

Secret 7 - Stargate

I thought this character was a Gary Stu played by a distractingly poor actor with an unlikable screen presence.

I hated him from the fourth episode of the first season and never really stopped. Horrible acting, thoroughly unlikeable character, the ULTIMATE Gary Stu.

He's not bad as Daniel. He's bad as everything else.

I kind of feel sorry for the guy.
