I wouldn't get angry, but I wouldn't think it made any sense either. The country of origin isn't a genre, and there's a huge difference between, say, Breath Of Fire and Lost Odyssey.

This. JRPG means Japanese Role Playing Game. If it's made somewhere else ≠ JRPG. It might have factors/gameplay of a JRPG, but in essence, it is still something different.

Maybe WJPRG? Western Japanese Role Playing Game? It has the same connotation, while saying that it is in fact made somewhere else.

This seems really similar to the whole semantics issue with "anime" and "anime-esque cartoons".

WJPRG might work, though.

I think they are similar situations, but when I think of shows like A:TLA, I still think of them as western cartoons. They just take the visual style of anime and give it a western feel.

I always took it to mean Japanese-style RPG. As in RPGs in the style that was always prominent in Japanese RPGs.

Actually, it gets called that because that's where the *type* of rpg developed since rpgs developed in both Japan and the west, not because all of the games in that style were from their respective areas.

Also, saying they should be called 'wjrpgs' completely ignores that some of the biggest makers of jrpgs aren't in the west. For example, South Korea produces a *ton* of them, and has for quite some time. However, they aren't in the west - and they aren't the only place that's produced to not be in what's traditionally considered the west.

...And vice versa with western rpgs [because...you know. Japan has actually produced some of them too, but they don't fit with jrpgs at all in style or tone.]

I meant if it was a western jrpg, you'd call it a wjrpg. If it was from somewhere else, tack on another initial. Or you can call it JRPGS. Japanese Role Playing Game Style.

Skyrim isn't Japanese, though? The point I was trying to make was that there's a huge difference between Japanese RPGs -- so referring to it as a genre really makes no sense, IMHO. Sorry; I should've tried to be clearer!
