I wouldn't get angry, but I wouldn't think it made any sense either. The country of origin isn't a genre, and there's a huge difference between, say, Breath Of Fire and Lost Odyssey.

This. JRPG means Japanese Role Playing Game. If it's made somewhere else ≠ JRPG. It might have factors/gameplay of a JRPG, but in essence, it is still something different.

Maybe WJPRG? Western Japanese Role Playing Game? It has the same connotation, while saying that it is in fact made somewhere else.

it's not as big difference as with breath of fire and skyrim.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-19 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Before I read the text I thought this was a video game starring Princess Bubblegum. Disappointed that it isn't.

i don't give a flipping shit about games, but "oel manga" is the most idiot name i ever saw.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-19 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)

Secret 6 - Japanese role-playing videogames, role-playing videogames

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-19 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is an image of the upcoming role-playing videogame "Child of Light". It shows two small characters fighting against monsters atop stone pillars in a forest. It looks like one of the characters cast a spell with fireballs at the monsters.]

I find it hilarious how angry JRPG [Japanese role-playing game] fans get when you call a game that isn't Japanese a JRPG.

They're definitely a genre, and until we come up with a real name for it (cinematic RPG?), JRPG is the best term we have.

easy

(Anonymous) 2013-09-19 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"JRPG style"

boom problem solved

(Anonymous) 2013-09-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, since JRPG = Japanese RPG, and Child of Light technically isn't Japanese, I can see why people are saying it's not? But it's very clearly inspired by JRPGs and meant to emulate one. Ubisoft is not pretending it's anything else by any stretch. I think it looks neat. Can't wait to see more of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-19 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah how dare you call that similar looking game with similar plot formats and play style by the same name as those nearly identical games that really only differ by country of origin
How dare you

(Anonymous) 2013-09-20 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
...because the country of origin is part of the name.

There are a lot of films made in various European countries that mimic the style of American films, but you certainly wouldn't declare that, as a result, we should call them all American films.

Why not just go with RPG? (Though I don't get being overtly upset over calling that game a JRPG. Stumped maybe, but...)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
This. It's a roleplaying game, so what's wrong with that name?

The problem is that Diablo is also an RPG, and it's nowhere NEAR the same genre as Japanese-style RPGs. (Actually, the problem is that video game genres are divided in really weird ways, but that's one of the symptoms.)

It still blows my mind whenever someone goes NU-UH when I add Dark/Demon's Souls to the list of JRPGs, and insist on calling it a WRPG made by Japanese developers or what have you. It makes it look like the Japanese are incapable of making anything other than moeblobs in turn-based combat fighting to terrible J-Pop tracks and if they do anything else it was all thanks to us!

No. Nonononono. Demon's/Dark Souls is something completely different; something no Western developer has done before either. From Software also didn't think it would even succeed in the West and they were downright astonished that it did even better there than in Japan. Just because it isn't sparkle-nguu or turn-based doesn't mean it's not Japanese. People in that country are capable of original thought.

I'd make the case that Dark Souls is the same genre as the Gothic games--over-the-shoulder action RPG where you spend most of your time getting your ass handed to you.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
It blows your mind that people disagree with your special snowflake definition of JRPG?

I generally refer to the two main styles of RPG I encounter as "turn-based" or "action-oriented". I find that people still tend to understand what I'm saying.

It's like the people who insist over and over that a manga-style comic is, in fact, not a "manga", because it was not made in Japan.

Or that insist an anime-style cartoon is not "anime," because it was not made in Japan.

Bunch of fucking weebs, the lot of them.

If an American-style film was made in France, would you call it an American film?

I am baffled, JRPG as a GENRE that has nothing to do with the origin of the game (but with the origin of the genre) and that is distinctly different from western RPG has been around... I don't know, forever? Are people living under a rock?

I mean what, you think Japan is so super special that we need a special word for games made there, as if it fucking matters where a game was made? No.

I'm surprised no one is derailing the topic and talking about how cool Child of Light seems so far. It looks so pretty and you get to play as a tiny princess. I'm so going to get it when I can afford a nextgen console.
