Is the criteria for being a "token gay character" as simple as not being an integral part of the plot? I think there's more to Danny's character than being gay- not to mention he's not the only queer char- but I can understand the frustration that all the main players are straight (as far as we know, and I haven't seen the last 3 eps ).
Of course the plot is a fucking disaster so I don't know why anyone expects anything halfway competent out of this show...

every time the show talks about Danny it's about his gayness

Or about him having health issues (talking to Ethan about scars in the motel, being sick with mistletoe poisoning), or about him practicing for the recital/memorial, or about his project (that Stiles steals from him to help figure out locations for the Darach).

In addition to the above, in previous seasons he was Jackson best friend, everyone likes him, he's goalie on the lacrosse team, he has a juvenile record for hacking, he's weirdly good at throwing coins into cups...
Danny doesn't just show up for the "lol gay" lines and then dissappear.
