Pissed off on my course today

[personal profile] pkbitchgirl 2013-09-20 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm on a training course and last week the lecturer told us to bring in a song that inspired us on the following Thursday, play it and say why it inspired us

But the problem is, I don't have a song that's important to me or inspires me.

So roll on earlier today (well yesterday now), I explained that I didn't have a song that was important to me or inspired me.

Cue several people telling me that I HAD to have a song that inspired me which ended up annoying me and me saying that I hated it when people told me I had to like something or have something that inspired me

Why can't people accept that not everyone is like them?

I must use that one next time I'm asked that.

It is such a standard ice-breaker/training exercise question that it is good to have a pre-prepared answer. I always say I like The Gambler by Kenny Rogers. It always goes down well with corporate shills. It inspires me to do my best by learning to be bold when I have to be, but by teaching me to cut my losses when things go bad, and to tell the difference. Nice bit of management speak.

basically like telling them the last thing you read was the latest Malcolm Gladwell book or something suitably banal that managers all salivate over.

Exactly, oh top tip. never, even as a joke, ever claim your inspirational book is a Scott Adams one. I claimed mine as The Joy of Work, mainly because of the title and I figured that just saying that it taught the art of finding zen and joy in the workplace and pursuit of my duties would go down well, but then the senior supervising manager went and ordered a box of copies based on my rec and didn't read the books or even the write up before handing them out to staff on the floor.

I left the company shortly thereafter. That one kinda backfired a bit. Stick to the banal bland crap, that's my advice. And if you log onto F!S at work, use a co-worker's computer.

People actually have one song that inspires them? I mean, I have favorite songs, but I'd be hard pressed too to pick one song and explain why it inspired me.

Are you a sociopath?

Re: Pissed off on my course today

(Anonymous) 2013-09-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Normally I'd agree but it's a pretty standard ice breaker because it's the norm for people to have a song that is important to them or inspires them. If you're that far out of the fold, expect to be treated that way.

Re: Pissed off on my course today

(Anonymous) 2013-09-20 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure a lot of people have a song that is important/inspiring to them. But saying it's the norm suggests you're supposed to have one, that there's something strange about you if you don't. That's ridiculous.

NAYRT but it's abnormal for a human of any culture not to have a song that is important or inspiring to them. And from a mental health standpoint, yeah, you're definitely supposed to have one because NOT having one is indicative of dissociative disorders and antisocial behavior. And I mean antisocial in the clinical sense, not the tumblr way of "I don't want to talk to people."

Rookie mistake there, trying to be honest on a training session. You oughta just have pulled a song out of the air and pretended. Yeah, its dishonest, but the work world runs on dishonesty and underhanded tactics like a car runs on gas.

Are you a sociopath? Because that's one of the early indicators. Your reaction probably didn't do you any favors, either.

Not having a song that "inspires" you is not an early indicator of sociopathy.

...or is important to you. You missed part of that.

Re: Pissed off on my course today

No, it's a warning sign. Go to any psychologist for an initial consult and they will ask you about a song that's important to you. If you insist you don't have one, they will then ask another nine questions about the nine other things that are considered warning signs, including pets/animals. If you fall outside the norm on three or more of these, then they will start looking into the actual symptoms of psychopathy. If you have even one, they are required to initiate a 72 hour hospitalization for observation to start the diagnostic process.

Couldn't you have faked it? This sounds like a pretty standard assignment, not some grand test of character. Likelier than not, people probably thought you were just trying to get out of having to do the work.

Re: Pissed off on my course today

(Anonymous) 2013-09-20 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I would have been tempted to do the same (I don't have an "inspiration song" either)

but this sort of thing is to see how you get along with your coworkers, not to get to know the real you or for you to take it at face-value

hindsight is 20/20, etc., but next time just pick a song from a genre you like, so people know what you are into if they care that much, and be politely interested in your coworkers

you failed this test, sorry :( you are not ready to be a pokemon master yet

wouldn't have happened if you didn't want to prove what a ~special snowflake~ you are. you did and found out people don't like special snowflakes. cry moar.

oh fuck off that's stupid. Some people are just not inspired by songs.

Re: Pissed off on my course today

(Anonymous) 2013-09-20 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it's easier to just go along to get along. Taking a stand on a simple assignment that requires little work is more trouble than it's worth. So you don't have a song, you pick one anyway and blend in and pass the assignment. Take a stand and then argue people about it and you're likely to have a hard time in that course and any others you take with that prof because you've made yourself stick out in a bad way.

Why should it be so important to blend in?

People liking you or at least being indifferent towards you makes life easier.

I'd probably have the same reaction as you. Not because I'm a sociopath (this thread is weird...).
But IME stuff like this is just someone trying to fill curricula, and "get people involved" by making it personal.
It doesn't sound like a test, just sounds like your instructor wanted you to play and talk about something and you took the instructions a bit too literally. I'm sure some other people just picked a song they liked and exaggerated how much it meant to them. Pick your battles, as they say.
