Am I the only who thinks this secret is being misread?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-20 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
If i'm reading correctly, the OP seems to agree that "UPDATE NOW ROWR!!" comments are tasteless and annoying, whether it be of the "do it or else" nature or the seemingly less offensive (but still just as, to some) "PLEEEEEEEEASE!" nature. S/he/it seems to understand why any author would be upset about those kinds of comments and the pressures they may put on an author.

The thing the OP is complaining about is when BNfanfiction authors get upset at people who comment "Yeah! You updated!" when posting a new chapter after a longish amount of time (weeks, months, years?).

Which I kind of get. Like the person is celebrating. No assumed pressure in that comment. Just, "I'm happy you aren't dead the story isn't dead and you found time to write and update" but every body interprets things differently.

I guess it boils down to: Fic readers have no right to demand more fic from those who write it, and fic writers have no right to demand certain types of comments from those who read it. Agreed?

This is exactly what I took from this as well, so I was confused why everyone was getting angry at the OP. If the reviewers are demanding more updates, yes, that's irritating and rude. But if they're expressing excitement that a fic updated after a long hiatus, that's not worth getting upset over? The reviewer is basically saying "after such a long period of time I'm very happy that you still have interest in the fandom and this project" which also likely means that the reviewer has been a fan for some time and still enjoys the fic. Fandom tastes fade and change, the quality of writing can degrade over time. If you have a lingering fanbase that stays with you regardless of gaps between chapters when they could have lost interest and bailed for another fandom, that's actually pretty awesome.

There's a definite need for review etiquette, but in the same means that no one should be rude and demanding of their free entertainment, it's ridiculous for writers to expect reviewers to follow a very specific set of feedback rules. You're a fanfic writer, not a NY Times Booklist Bestseller.

This, both of these comments. THIS.

Yeah, sometimes I think writers expect any long hiatus to be some kind of verboten, never to be mentioned thing, but IMHO that just helps fuel the culture of shame around long-hiatused fics. I personally have some stories I have all but abandoned, and do from time to time get pleading/wondering messages about them, but in general I take them as compliments and rarely respond to them at all, so in turn I don't find it upsetting and it stresses me out a lot less than if I treated them as guilt trips... so those rare times they actually ARE guilt trips, I don't take it personally at all.

If the majority of people are confused or misreading OP's secret, perhaps OP sucks at expressing their thoughts - whatever they are

Or people are too busy taking it personally to parse words properly because most commenters here are fic writers.

Idk, Englis is my second language and this thread's interpretation is exactly how I read OP's secret.

No, it just means they suck at reading comprehension... like you.

You may be surpised to hear that a lot of people are readers and not writers because they are aware of the fact that they are not great at putting their thoughts on paper and getting their message across: not everyone is good at writing (surprise, surprise) and for those of us who acknowledge this, your entitled remark is rather irksome.

Having said that, I too got the OP's message to mean exactly what the anon above detailed in the 'Am I the only one who thinks this secret is being misread?' So no, I don;t think OP is being unclear.

I do think that this community attracts a lot of people who fly off the handle without necessarily taking the time to read a too-long post which details a fairly complex fandom issue.

It's unfortunate that 'entitled' doesn't mean what you seem to think that it means.

...It's even more unfortunate that, despite that, I have to agree that OP's secret is being misread.

Yes, this also exactly how I read this post too, but the completely rabid reactions above prove to me that some writers can indeed:

1) completely misinterpret comments and fly off the handle
2) be over-sensitive and get offended and defensive (or aggressive) for no reason

As a reader-only, I have long suspected that being a writer (a good one, capable of writing stuff that makes the reader want to thank the author and express their admiration) requires an artistic and creative touch which predisposes you to over-sensitivity. At least on some topics, which vary depending on the individual.

I agree. The secret parsed to me as "saying Yay! My totes favest fic has been updated! is just me being happy a new chapter's up, so slow your roll and don't be so butthurt" except the OP worded it rather badly.

But I still got the gist of it. So why's everybody flying off the handle at this OP?
