If "dom" becomes "domme", why doesn't "sub" become "subbe"?

[personal profile] sootyowl 2013-09-21 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Because women are already subs, obviously.

Wait, domme is for women? I thought it was just a fancy way to say dom.

...

Well.

[personal profile] sootyowl 2013-09-21 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! Domme is for females, dom for males. But I've seen people use dom for females as well. I can't recall ever seeing domme for males.

Sorry for the disappointment :/

Damn it. And I, in general, dislike gendering words that don't inherently already have a gender so this turned a word I thought was kinda interesting into something that makes me kinda irritated.

Damn.

Oh well.

:( I can see how that would be irritating. Here's a kitten being silly to hopefully cheer you up.

Glad it helped :)

I said this below, but I always felt it was a power or control thing. Doms get to be Doms, Dommes, Dominatrixes, Dominants, whatever they choose to be while subs are... subs, always in lowercase. It's about the power balance.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-09-21 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I can get that.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There are plenty of women who call themselves Dominants anyway, so it isn't as though the gender is enforced.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-09-21 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I get that and I'm not against people using domme if that's what they want. I would respect them and refer to them like that. I just have a stupid pet peeve. I feel the same way about actor/actress and waiter/waitress. I realize my little weirdness stuff shouldn't get in the way of what people want to be called.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Prob because male and female doms are called different things (Dominator/Master vs Dominatrix/Mistress) while subs are called submissives no matter their gender.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but why?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they come from Latin? While submissive comes from English.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It may be because it fits into the D/s mentality as well.

The same thing along the lines of capitalizing Dom/me or Master and sub always being lowercase; no one is ever a Sub, they are a sub. Having Dom/Domme be distinct might reinforce the intentionally uneven power balance; the Dom/Domme gets their physical sex automatically recognized while the sub doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Do people get called Dominators?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I've always heard "Dominant" and never "Dominator" but that's only afaik.

I've seen it occasionally, and it always gives me a giggle. It is the male equivalent to dominatrix, grammatically speaking, so if it's not the original word, it's at least a logical backformation, but these guys just ain't sexy...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
...I'm calling myself a subbe from now on.

Damn it, now I want to read D/s femslash!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-21 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
...recs?

If incest is okay, some Rose/Roxy leash-play

If uh, you have any specific requests and I'm familiar with the characters, I'm in the mood for this as well so I might try to write you something, but it'll probably be short.
