Transcripts!
Secret 1 - Sherlock Holmes, action heroes and sidekicks
Even though I totally love the whole "badass hero with badass sidekick" genre, it always distresses me to watch them. Because I'm constantly distracted by imagining how I'd mess up and be incompetent and start crying and get the hero killed (or worse, annoyed) if I were a sidekick.
And how I could never be a hero, because I wouldn't have the self-confidence to lead anyone in a dangerous situation, because I'd get them killed. And I couldn't trust anyone that way, anyway.
Secret because: This is a dumb thing to feel shitty about. 90% of ALL people couldn't do it either.
Secret 2 - Gaia Online
I don't want to leave Gaia, because I have a lot of nostalgia and a lot of effort invested in it, but I absolutely HATE what it's become.
The "Gaia Cash" (real money) items have gotten insane. For point of reference: 100 Gaia Cash points = $1 USD. Some of these items are $50 and $100 and $500.
I hate myself for coming back here. I don't spend any real money on the site, but I hate giving it any traffic after it's gotten this way.
Bonus secret: I hate the apologists for this kind of price exorbitancy, which Gaia has a TON of. It pisses me off. The more it's supported, the worse it's gonna get.
Secret 3 - Fandom friendship
I have a fandom friend, she used to be such a sweet person, but then she started co-mudding a bunch of communities and fests and changed.
Now she thinks she's too important and stopped replying messages and comments and when she does, it's like she's doing you a favor and always obnoxious.
It makes me sad because she was really fun to be around. Now I just avoid her and roll my eyes when I see her posts.
Secret 4 - Fandom friendship, Star Wars
I don't know what I did but I feel like I have lost you like he lost Anakin and I wish I could fix it because you are the only reason I stayed in the fandom.
Yeah, I know. Cry moar.
Secret 5 - Original characters in fanfiction
First off, let me start by saying I FULLY and WHOLEHEARTEDLY believe, that like other things, Original Characters &emdash; especially those that are major &emdash; and Original Character X Canon Character should be clearly tagged. I know that there are people who don't like it and don't care to read it. I know there are a majority of people who read fanfiction for canon characters, I KNOW Sues exist and are annoying to people (they annoy me too).
That said, I really wish we could have one Original Character discussion that doesn't turn into a reminder of something that a lot of people already effing know. I love Elsewhere Fic, fanfic for the canon world rather than the canon characters, and stuff like that. I like reading AND writing it. I'd like to have just one fandom conversation (and maybe others) where I don't get reminded five times that my interests are a minority and many people are not going to read the stuff no matter how well it's written. I'd like one conversation where I don't get reminded that people think I'm pathetic and obsessed with my Original Character, or I 'probably' write this or that.
Every conversation about Original Characters always includes someone who has to make sure people know that they think they're 'shitty'. Always. This is a popular opinion, so I don't see why fifty people need to come in and say "I read fanfiction for the canons". Congratulations. You and 80% of fanfic readers.
Bonus secret: I find it ironic that everyone assumes Original Character fic writers are all the 'special snowflake' types (and quite a few of them are but usually they're young) but when the topic of Original Characters come up a dozen or more people feel the need to pop up to say "I don't like fics with Original Character, I like reading the CANON characters." As if we don't already know. Hell, I tend to assume most fanfic writers by default prefer canon character fics and am surprised when my weird little stories get interest. I wish more people who were interested in canon world over canon characters would speak up.
Bonus secret: Just watch...in the comments section the "I read for the canon characters and I don't like Original Cahracters" people will comment anyway. Everybody knows you exist For Fuck's Sake.
Too long; didn't read
Secret 6 - Adventure Time
I like this, but I really want to see/hear a version with Marceline and Finn, too.
Secret 7 - Grey's Anatomy, Buffy The Vampire Slayer
I don't know why this couple [Calie X Arizona] helps sooth my (still) broken heart in regards to this couple [Tara X Willow].
Secret because: They aren't comparable except that they're lesbians, and seriously, it's been over a decade. Willow/Tara would be different on today's TV.
Secret 8 - shipping, slash, het, femslash
I think straight girls who are grossed out by straight fanfic smut are really fucking weird, to be honest. I understand not liking straight porn because most of it is targeted toward men and can be pretty misogynistic, but a lot of straight fanfic smut is written by women for women, and the quality level is just as good as yaoi fanfiction.
Therefore, if you're a straight girl, and you refuse to read straight smut because you find it "gross," then I think you either a) have some serious internalized misogyny going on, b) have really low self-esteem about your body, or c) all of the above.
Yeah, a lot of these girls make the argument taht they can't read het because they're not into vagina or whatever, but I have literally only met one guy on the internet who exclusively reads yuri/femslash. Most of the ones I've seen are super into het pairings, which makes me think that this is pretty much exclusively a female slash shipper problem.
Secret because: I know I'm going to be reamed for this even though everyone knows I'm right.
Secret 9 - Dragon Ball Z
Not secret: I've never seen an episode of Dragonball Z in my life.
A few years ago, there was a student in the classrom I wored in, and he was a big Dragonball Z fan. He would play with the physical therapy exercise balls like they were spirit bombs (okay, it was catch, but whatever), and he would often ask me to play. Sometimes I would, but most of the time I would be busy, or just not in the mood.
It's been about a year since he died, very unexpectedly. I don't know if words have been invented to describe the regret I feel for saying "not right now" or "maybe later," knowing what I do know...
All I know is that if I ever get around to watching Dragonball Z, I'm probably going to cry like a baby the first time they make a spirit bomb.
Bonus secret: From the Dragonball Z Wiki: "To use the Spirit Bomb, one must have a pure heart --" god dammit here come the tears.
Secret 10 - The Mortal Instruments City of Bones
I word in Acquisitions for a major book supplier. Whenever I see anything by this woman come up on an order, I look for any excuse to cancel it.
Secret 11 - Young Adult vampire novels
I think I'm starting to dislike the "anti-Bella Swan" characters more than the Bella Swans. And it bothers me that young girls see them as role models because "at least they aren't Bella Swan" which is just substituting one extreme with the other. I'd take a useless, needs-to-be-saved character over an aggressive, everything-I-do-is-right character any day.
