I know! She was with Oz and happy about it, so she's bisexual! I hate that they decided she was a lesbian and left it at that.

She also had a history of being attracted to men. She admitted to having a crush on Giles, plus there was her longtime crush on Xander plus their affair when she was with Oz and he was with Cordelia. And they just totally erased all that somehow even though she was actually standing next to Tara when she admitted her crush on Giles *smh*

They didn't "erase" all that. But Willow made a choice when she chose Tara and it was a valid choice.

I think it would have been worse if she'd rebounded with a guy rather than another woman. Although rebounding at all so soon after Tara's murder was unnecessary as fuck, but that's another thing.

They did erase all that by constantly saying Willow was "lesbian now." And her rebound after Tara was because of criticism that her relationship with Tara was a one-off even though in canon they made it out to be that her relationship with Oz had been the one-off.

No they didn't. It they wanted to erase the first three seasons of Oz and Xander-crushing, they would have written something along the lines of a denial about the boy-crushing. Willow would have had some idiot insightful moment about how she'd always been attracted to girls and was in denial. They didn't do that. The "gay now" was Willow affirming that despite her past, she was identifying as lesbian. It doesn't erase her past (Oz was brought up as late as s7, ffs), it just established her self-identifying as lesbian from then on.

I just rewatched Buffy and they totally erased that. That's why they said she's a lesbian instead of bisexual.

da

Wait, wait, wtf. Being a lesbian isn't a choice. Being attracted to women (or men) isn't a choice here. Come the fuck on. Willow can identify however it is that she likes but she fits the textbook definition of "bisexual", at least at times.

It's possible that she went from being attracted to both and her sexuality evolved into her being solely attracted to women; it's even possible that she wasn't really attracted to guys to begin with but she didn't realize that she was actually gay. But that's not how the show described it. Willow showed sexual interest in men and then suddenly she didn't. She was "gay now" but her previous interest in men wasn't shown as confusion or part of her figuring her sexuality out.

She may have fit the textbook definition of bisexual but if she chose to identify as lesbian from her freshman year in college onwards, it has to be respected. But again, that doesn't mean they're her past as bisexual because Oz was never ignored, and neither was her Xander-crushing.

And I don't think Kennedy was written as a counter to the criticism of Tara being a one-off relationship. I believe Joss wrote Kennedy in as a way of assuaging the W/T fans that Willow's sexuality wasn't about to do a 360 back to Boys Town just because Tara died.

Although when Kennedy asked Willow when she knew she liked women, and Willow answered, "not women. Woman." I thought that was a sort of confirmation that if it weren't for meeting Tara, then Willow wouldn't have realized she was attracted to girls. *shrugs* I don't know though, Joss loves ambiguity when he can write it in, it makes retconning so much simpler later on down the road. Plausible deniability and all that.
