You seem to think that everyone enjoys porn by imagining themselves as one of the participants. Some people enjoy porn in a more voyeuristic manner, and don't pretend to be one of the participants -- thus, they find it more important to be attracted to all the participants in the sex act. Not everyone masturbates the same way you do, OP.

This. People enjoy smut in a million different ways, identify (or don't) with one of the characters or both at once. Some people view the story as if they're a camera hovering on the ceiling. Some people do all of these things depending on the story or the fandom or the POV character, changing it around. All of these things have a bearing on the genre they'll be into reading.

OP has a very simplistic view of the psychology of fandom.
