So you're saying that women only care about characters and relationships while men care about plots? That's some sexist bullshit. Personally I know just as many women who love shows like The Wire, Oz, Breaking Bad etc. as men. The Wire is not a show for everyone, but that's not gender-related.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it a show for an intelligent, discerning audience, gender be damned.

Cool your jets, yo. She's not saying shit about what women care about, she's saying the show was marketed to men. Which it was, as was the Sopranos, OZ, Entourage, and every other HBO show because that's what HBO does.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see a reference to marketing in the above - could you kindly point that out to me?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Initially yes, but then she went on to say in the second comment that shows that focus on plots attract a male audience and shows that focus on characters attract a female audience. And that's bullshit. Also, just because a show is initially marketed to men doesn't mean it will actually have a mostly male audience, so that's no reason why it shouldn't have a fandom.

Where are you getting the "fact" that they're mostly watched by men?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-22 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
http://www.wired.com/underwire/2013/06/women-game-of-thrones/

"According to statistics provided to Wired by Nielsen, approximately 2 million women are tuning in to the show on average each week – about 42 percent of Thrones’ total 4.8 million viewers."

"But other critically acclaimed series have a far bigger gender divide; the 2.6 million viewers for Season 5 of AMC’s Breaking Bad were a mere 36 percent female."

More men are watching these shows than women.

And what's true for Breaking Bad, which as someone else said is actually very different from The Wire when it comes to structure, plot, characters etc., must be true for The Wire? Right.
